Mr. George Baker

Language: English

Harry sits on the porch with 100 year old Mr. George Baker who can play the drums but goes to school, just like Harry, so he can learn to read. In this episode LeVar explores how learning is an ageless adventure with a senior dance troupe, and a family that has run a bakery for five generations.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Old Book Friends

Visit the public library together as a family, and check out some old book friends (books family members are familiar with and/or have checked out many times before because they enjoy them). Give everyone a chance to share their favorite parts of the books and talk about why they like them.

Special Friends

Help your child make connections with an older neighborhood or family member. They can spend the time together by reading with them, walking their pet or running an errand, taking them a snack or treat, inviting them to a school event, drawing a picture or making a gift for them, asking them to tell stories about when they were young, playing a game or working a puzzle together.

Making Family Memories

Make a picture or photo story of someone in the family teaching another person how to do something -- perhaps cooking a favorite recipe, making a craft, building something out of clay, playing a musical instrument, dancing, sewing or needlework art, jumping rope.

You will need:

  • Camera or paper & crayons, markers, colored pencils (or any other art supplies you want to use)
  • paper for the album
  • tape or glue
  • pencil or pen
  • yarn, stapes or string
  1. Take photos or draw pictures of the activity.
  2. Mount the pictures on sheets of paper and write a sentence to describe each picture. Arrange the pictures in sequence
  3. Make a cover
  4. Fasten the pages together with yarn, staples, or similar materials to form a book form.

Read the book to each other often.

Check out some of these books on your
next trip to the library:

  • Grandfather Counts by Andrea Cheng
  • The Music in Derrick’s Heart by Gwendolyn Battle-Lavert
  • A Bird about to Sing by Laura Nyman Montenegro
