Boxes for Katje

Language: English

Boxes for Katje is about a charitable effort that began with a girl and her family, who sent a care package to Holland during World War II, and grew throughout their communities. Host LeVar Burton introduces helping groups -- the Global Ambassadors, youngsters who build international goodwill and do community service, and the Backyard in a Box project – kids creating kits for kids who live in Hurricane Katrina devastated areas so they can enjoy their backyards.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Plant tulips

Plant some tulips in the fall to enjoy in the spring.

You will need:

  • tulip bulbs
  • bone meal (available where garden supplies are sold)
  • trowel or spade for digging
  1. Plant them 6-8 inches deep, scatter a bit of bone meal in the hole, and place the bulbs in with the points facing up.
  2. Make a memory of the activity by taking pictures or have your child draw a picture of the family planting the bulbs.
  3. Track the progress of the tulips frequently in the spring by taking photographs or drawing pictures.
  4. Be sure to include a picture of the blooming tulips!

Treasure box

Make a paper box for holding “treasures” using a few origami folds.
