Did you find a new family in the North?
I did. I had not been told that I would be living with a white family. I met
Doctor and Mrs. George McCabe, who would become my forever parents, and their
children. It was a healing experience. I lived in a family with four brothers
and sisters, all of them white. And I saw that there was nothing to be
frightened of. I saw that white people are just that--they are people who
happen to be a little white. And that was wonderful. To this day, the McCabes
are in my life.
