How did your experience at Central High shape the rest of your life?
It shaped everything. It made me leave my home and my family very early. To
this day, all of the Little Rock Nine have residual effects from the stress of
it. But the experience also put a core of steel in my spine. It made me
unafraid and unaffected by what people might call me.
