What made you decide to go to Central High?
It was in the neighborhood. My mother was working on her master's degree
at the University of Arkansas, which was near Central High. We used to ride by
Central High all the time. It was fabulous, this big huge castle. I had heard
the black people who were chefs and cooks there talk about the enormity of it.
It was eight stories altogether, with huge facilities--band pits, an apartment
for kids to practice homemaking in, the forerunners of computers. And I wanted
to see what was inside.
