Frederick Douglass, who had escaped slavery as a boy of 16, used his position as a newspaper publisher and as a persuasive speaker to help Elizabeth Cady Stanton convince delegates women needed suffrage. After a two-week break in the convention, the Seneca Falls delegates reconvened in Rochester, New York, and added suffrage to their platform.
