What is your air show routine like?
I tell people it goes back to the barnstorming era, the part of aviation
that I think was really romantic. I do all the loops and rolls, with a smoke
apparatus on my Stearman. I also do a maneuver called a hammerhead turn. You
get up some speed by diving down, then you pull the airplane up and establish a
line going straight up into the sky. The plane's power and speed decrease until
the airplane is about to fall straight backward. Just then, you put in full
rudder. The plane pivots around and falls down into a dive. It looks really
pretty, as if the airplane is just hanging in the sky for a moment.
