What kind of questions did kids ask about the exhibit?
Kids wanted to know if what they saw was real. Again and again, they
asked that question. Today, there are so many simulations. But in this
exhibition, everything was real--whether it was gold, or a jar of olives, or
the stern of the Nyantic, or clothing that miners wore.
Kids wanted to know what happened to the people involved--to the Native
American people who lived in California first and to the Mexican people who
came later, and to the gold miners who came here after that. Some of the
stories were really tragic. It wasn't all fun and games. Some people were
really treated awfully during the Gold Rush. Some were even killed.
Kids also wanted to know "How much is it worth?" Gold was worth 12 to 16
dollars an ounce, during the Gold Rush. Today, it varies, depending on what its
stock is being traded at. It could be $300, $320, $330 an ounce.
