5 Painted barn roof top SEE ROCK CITY How did the owners of tourist businesses attract customers?

Mostly they used billboards along the side of the road. Rock City had a crew of painters who traveled from the East coast through the Midwest and to Texas, painting the roofs of barns with big black & white signs saying SEE ROCK CITY. Sometimes the billboards for one motel or attraction would put up a series of billboards starting as far away as 200 miles. You could count down the miles by reading each sign..150 miles to go, 120 miles to go, and so on. Eventually the United States government decided there were too many signs cluttering up the view. It made businesses stop putting up so many.
