This 18-square-mile vacation spot along the Wisconsin River in south central
Wisconsin is one of the Midwest's most popular. Early French explorers were
impressed with the area's dramatic rock formations, deep gorges, and
sandstone cliffs. They called the place "dallas," a French word meaning "flat
layers of rock." The first settlers trapped and traded furs, but in the
mid-1800's tourism took off. The town of Wisconsin Dells grew, adding hotels
and restaurants. Today, visitors enjoy the Dells' 3000 campsites and
attractions such as scenic boat tours, the Great Wisconsin Dells Balloon Rally,
and Noah's Ark Waterpark.
