On March 1, 1872, the United States Congress established Yellowstone National
Park, the first and still the largest national park. Among those who helped
assure Yellowstone's protection was future president Theodore Roosevelt.
Millions of tourists each year are drawn to Yellowstone's ragged
mountains, deep canyons, fast-flowing rivers, and lodgepole pine forests. Its
famous "Old Faithful" geyser is just one of Yellowstone's
unusual geologic features, which also include hot springs, mud caldrons, paint
pots, and hot rivers. Buffalo, elk, grizzly bears, and wolves all call
Yellowstone home.
