Eighteen miles wide at its widest point, 277 miles long, and more than a mile
deep at its deepest, the Grand Canyon has long astonished visitors with its
dramatic views and stunning rock formations. The first Europeans to visit the
canyon came in 1540, in an expedition led by Spanish explorer Francisco
Coronado. American explorer John Wesley Powell led the first expedition down
the Colorado River through the canyon in 1869. Grand Canyon National Park,
created in 1919, now plays host to more than 5 million visitors each year.
