Drops on Pennies next ZOOMsci | ZOOMsci index | list of activities | Your Results Sent in by: Amber M. of South Amherst, OH The pennies are back with added change for an added challenge. Materials needed:
Instructions: 1. How many drops of water can you fit on a penny? How about a quarter? Make a prediction. Start by putting one drop of water on a penny. Now, how many more do you think it can hold? Why? 2. Keep adding drops to see how your prediction turns out. Remember to keep track of your data. Do it three times and then figure out the average number of drops that can fit on a penny. 3. Next, try it with a quarter. Make a prediction. 4. Use what you know about how many drops of water the penny held. 5. Keep adding drops to see how your prediction turns out. Do it three times and then figure out the average number of drops that can fit on a quarter. 6. Compare the number of drops the penny held to the quarter. Now it's time for you to experiment. Think of a question that you want answered. Like, do all pennies hold the same amount of water? What other things besides size affect the number of drops each coin can hold? Write down what you thought was going to happen and what did happen. Then test out your question and send your reports in to our special feedback area. Every week, we'll publish a whole bunch. You can also send us your pictures or video of this ZOOMsci: ZOOMsci ZOOM Box 350 Boston, MA 02134 Some of your results: Destiney, age 6 of Coeur D'Alene, ID wrote: 11 drops on a penny. 14 drops on a quater. 9 drops on a nickle. Lindsey, age 12 of Lake Orion, MI wrote: I tested a half dollar, a pennie, and a dime. I tested each one 3 times just how you did if it was wrong on the half dollar I got 57, 72, and 84. On the pennie I got 32, 17, and 11 ( I messed up that time). Alo on the dime I got 16, 14, and 23! You should try a dime and a half dollar! Breeanna, age 8 of Mandeville, LA wrote: We dropped water on pennies, Breeanna had 40 drops, Bruce had 43 drops, Trella had 18 drops, and Brooke had 7 drops. Cristal, age 8 of Kennewick, WA wrote: I tried this 10 times, competing with my mom. The most that I was able to get onto the penny was 32 drops and my mom got 24. We even tried it on a quarter, dime and nickel. It was a lot of fun. Ashley, age 11 of Botkins, OH wrote: I tried a gold dollar coin and it held 67 drops and I tried a silver dollar coin and it held 78. Why do you think the silver held more? Emily, age 8 of Los Osos, CA wrote: Put ten drops of water on a penny then, ad five drops of salt water. Amanda, age 11 of Regina, SK wrote: I did it with the penny and I guessed it would be 50 and it turned out it was 99 drops. I also did it with the loonie and guessed 100 and it turned out to be 200. Siobhan & Sinead, age 12 of Quincy, MA wrote: I took 1 penny, 1 nickel, 1 dime, 1 quarter, and 1 dollar coin and tested it out. Everytime I predicted the number of drops, I always ended up with less actual drops. First I did the penny. I predicted 50 drops. I only got half the amount, 25, on the penny. Then I did a nickel. My prediction was 100. It only held 26. Then I tried out the dime. My prediction was 35. The actual amount was 19. For the quarter, I predicted 100, but it turned out to have 36 drops. I predicted the dollar coin to hold 150 drops!! But, unfortunately, it only held 44. Then to test out something strange, I put the coins on top of eachother, biggest to smallest. I predicted that it would hold 19 drops, since the single dime held 19 drops. It turned out to hold only 16 drops!!! Shelby, age 12 of Pasadena, TX wrote: I got 54 drop on a penny but I could have done more if my little sister would not of screamed. It scared me, so I droped the penny. Alex, age 11 of Huntington Beach, CA wrote: The drops built up on the penny. Kaitlyn, age 11 of Fairfield, TX wrote: I tried the experiment. Only I did all four kinds of coins (quarter, dime, nickel, and penny). I did three tries on each coin. These are my results: The quarter: the first try had 45 drops, the second had 50 drops, and the third had 40 drops. The nickel: the first try had 33 drops, the second had 34 drops, and the third had 45 drops! The dime: The first try had 28 drops, the 2nd had 20 drops, and the 3rd had 15. The penny: 1st was 30 drops, the 2nd had 33, and the 3rd had 31. I think the quarter had the most because it is biggest and it has little ridges around the quarter that kind of act like a gate. I am pretty sure that the dime had the least drops because it is smallest. I can't figure out why the nickel and the penny almost had the same amount of drops. Can you? Sam, age 9 of Boston wrote: I tried it with syrup and I got 15 drops, it was hard. Jordan, age 12 of Nashville, TN wrote: Me and my brother got a total of 95 drops on the penny before it spilt. Vicky wrote: We did drops on pennies in school and I got like 29 drops on the first try and everytime I try agian I get less drops. Why is that. Why do u think that is? Tea, age 12 of Lansing, MI wrote: When I did this I got 64 drops on a penny, I think thats because I was really carefull and very paicent.
