Advertising tells people about a product or service. Advertising usually focuses on the good parts of the product or service in an effort to get people to buy it.

Brand Loyalty is a person's preference for a product. When a person thinks a certain brand is best, and buying the brand becomes a habit, she or he is showing brand loyalty. Companies work hard to make customers loyal to their products.

Consumer is a person who buys goods or services and uses them personally instead of selling them. For example, a consumer would buy a TV to watch at home, not 100 TVs to sell to other people.

Focus Group is a small group of people chosen by marketers for the purpose of testing out a new product or idea. Marketers use this group to determine how to sell the new product or idea. By testing the small group, marketers hope to learn what a larger but similar group of people will think.

Marketing is the many ways that products are sold. It includes advertising, selling and delivering products to people. Marketers (people who work in marketing) try to get the attention of target audiences by using slogans, packaging design, celebrity endorsements and general exposure in the media world.

Media are the many different methods of communication available today. Web sites, postcards, CD-ROMs, magazines, TV, and movies are all different types of media. When media methods are used to communicate to thousands of people at the same time, they are called mass media.

Product Placement is a form of advertising in which marketers pay to have a product shown in the media. For example, if a character on a TV show is eating peanut butter and you can see the label on the jar, chances are good that it's a product placement.

Target Audience is a group of people that is expected to buy a particular product or service. For example, the target audience for diapers is mothers and fathers with babies. Advertisers and marketers use focus groups to help them determine how to reach their target audience.
