Surfing

I'm Carsten and I love to surf. And why not, I live in San Diego where there's 70 miles of coastline. But when it comes to catching a great wave, sometimes I just end up catching sun. My question: Where are the best waves?

How would you investigate this question?
This investigation takes some good planning. Different surfing locations have different wave conditions. What causes the differences int hose waves? Is the amount of wind a factor? How about how deep the water is, or whether the waves break over sand or over rocks or reef?
