Do you remember the feeling you got when you first saw your double scoop of triple chocolate fudge ice cream on a hot summer day? Or when you jumped into the cool water of your friend's swimming pool after running around and working up a sweat? That all-around fuzzy feeling is the feeling I get practicing and playing my favorite sport of rugby. To be honest, I don't know what initially attracted me to get involved, maybe it being so different; but I do know what has kept me playing—the incredible people.
I've had the great opportunity to meet some amazing athletes that have been very inspirational in my development as a rugby player and person. Rugby has taught me to feel comfortable with being uncomfortable, push myself in situations where most would sit back, and most importantly, it has given me the drive and determination to pass on these messages to other athletes. This past spring (2004) I had the opportunity to coach a high school rugby team in Kingston. It was awesome! After a couple weeks, I found that my true inspiration was watching these girls excel and embrace something so new and foreign to them, like I once did 5 years ago. I hope to continue coaching and draw new inspiration from each athlete I reach.
My message to everyone out there, young or old, big or small, is to recognize that no matter your shape, size or ability, being physically active is something that everyone can do. So go out there and just try it! And to that kid who wants to try something new and dive into the growing sport of rugby, I have one piece of advice for you…think big, play big and expect BIG things from yourself! And always remember that the greatest challenge is listening to your own advice. One of my all time favorite quotes is: "When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on." The world is out there for you to discover—it's up to you to go do it!
