When I first started out, I didn't even really know what skeleton was. I wanted to bobsleigh, but because of my age I was not allowed. Then someone told me that I was old enough to slide skeleton, so I thought I'd give it a try. I did a beginners’ skeleton school, and from my first run down that track I was hooked. After my first day sliding, I didn't put another thought into bobsleigh... I knew skeleton was the sport for me.
I love skeleton because of the way it makes me feel. In nothing else I have ever done can I be nervous, excited, scared and thrilled all in one minute. I love the speed of skeleton and the butterflies I get in my stomach before a run. I even love the cold weather, because it's all just another great part of the sport. Knowing that these are all the things I love to feel is what keeps me going in skeleton. Everyone has their bad days, and when mine come along I just do my best to remember why I love the sport to start with, and that it's actually love of the sport that keeps me out there.
I want to take skeleton as far as I possibly can. I have so many goals for the sport, some of them being long term, and some just being how I'd like to feel for my next run down the track. Over the next 5 years some of the goals I'd like to achieve would definitely be to get experience. I'd like to travel with the America's Cup circuit as well as the Europa Cup circuit, and I'd like to compete in Jr. Worlds. At the end of 5 years I would like to make the World Cup team, and represent Canada on the World Cup circuit.
To anyone out there who is interested in skeleton it is definitely something I'd encourage! There are 3 different tracks in North America (1 in Canada and 2 in the United States) and there are lots of programs that can get you on a sled for just one run, or lots if you want. The people are so nice and very willing to help, so if it's something you'd like to give a go, then just find out which track you can slide on, get started in a program and have fun!
