Color Collection

Find objects for all the colors of the rainbow.

Materials

  • Things you find around your home
  • Camera (optional)
  • Magazines (optional)
  • Paper
  • Markers
  • Scissors

Directions
Make a color collection with your child! Have her choose any color she likes. Together, walk around the house or outside looking for things that are that color. If you have a camera, she can take a picture of the things she finds. If it's something small enough (and it's allowed to be taken), hold onto it for the collection. She can also find pictures in magazines that are the right color and cut them out. Keep the collection in a safe place.

Next time, choose another color and do the same thing to make a different color collection. When your child has collections of things in 5 different colors, have her arrange the objects in rainbow order or think of another way to set them up. Then she can use the paper and markers to make labels for each color collection. Add any special information about the objects, and you have your own gallery exhibit!

Talk About It
There are lots of colored things that we can't bring home for our collections. Next time you go for a car, bus, or subway ride, keep an eye out for things of a certain color. Help your child make a list of things of that color, or just talk about the colors as you see them. To keep it fresh, pick a new color to focus on each time you go somewhere.
