Viewing Tips
Scholastic and PBS are celebrating
language learning and cultural diversity with a new entertaining
television series for children called Maya & Miguel.
This series, for children ages 6 to 11, chronicles the funny
and often outrageous lives of 10-year-old bilingual Latino
twins, Maya and Miguel Santos. Maya and Miguel live with
their parents above the family-run pet store and thrive
within their multicultural urban neighborhood.
This lively, animated show is sure
to provide you and your child with many fun and memorable
learning experiences. The show’s mission is to present
a contemporary Latino life rich in cultural traditions,
language and perspectives, closely representative of today’s
multicultural urban family and community. Watching and talking
with your child as you enjoy Maya & Miguel
episodes will nurture language acquisition by giving them
a better understanding of how people use the language in
daily interactions with one another.
Capture and share valuable teaching
moments with your child as you watch each episode of Maya
& Miguel by using these important viewing tips:
- Ask your child to guess what
each show might be about after hearing or reading the
title.
- Help your child practice spoken
language by talking with your child throughout the show.
- Discuss how characters use language
in different ways to communicate messages and define bilingual
and cultural words and phrases.
- Help your child identify with
the characters as they interact with their family and
friends.
- Encourage your child to share
thoughts and ideas in English and Spanish, or your own
native language.
- Read and discuss suggested English,
Spanish and bilingual language books.
- Check for understanding of basic
themes and concepts by asking questions using conversational
English, Spanish or your own native language.
- Encourage your child to draw
a picture of characters and objects from each show.
- Develop speaking and listening
skills by encouraging your child to talk about the characters,
their actions and the events within each show.
Most importantly, provide opportunities
for your child to extend show concepts and build language
acquisition by using the Maya & Miguel online
activities on this Web site.
