America Argues Over Illegal Immigrants
by Christen, 14, of Fort Wayne, Indiana
Posted January 23, 2008

Many of us are immigrants from a foreign country unless we are totally Native American. Some immigrants are illegal and some are legal. Even though some immigrants are illegal, they are very important to our economy. Democrats and Republicans want to make it legal for immigrants to work for a few years.

Immigrants that are legal and illegal are the total opposite. Illegal immigrants come to America without permission and do not follow the law, but legal immigrants are allowed. Illegal immigrants are also called illegal aliens. Millions of immigrants still come to the United States.

Some immigrants can even become citizens of the United States after sometime. The problem with letting legal immigrants work here causes less money for American workers. The bill in Congress to change the way immigration is managed failed because of the lack of agreement.

President Bush continues to push for a plan to let some immigrants stay and work. There will be more debating when he urges Congress to try again.

Clinton, Obama Battle Over Economy as a Campaign Focus Shifts
by Antanika, 14, of Maryland
Posted January 23, 2008

The battleground for the Democratic presidential nomination is shifting as Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama each push proposals to rejuvenate an economy that may be on the brink of recession.

The two main Democratic rivals are trying to outdo one another in offering stimulus packages. Obama yesterday proposed a $75 billion plan that includes tax cuts and government spending. Two days earlier, Clinton offered $70 billion program to address the housing crisis and rising energy costs.

Both Clinton and Obama claim their plans are better suited to help the ailing economy, a refrain sure to be heard throughout the campaign Obama, 46, says any proposal must put cash in consumers pockets immediately, while Clinton's advisers say the remedy must address the housing crisis.

The next big tests for the candidates are caucuses in Nevada on January 19 and a primary in Florida, which was hit hard by the declining housing market. A week later voters in almost two dozen states, including California and New York, cast their ballots.

Dog Gets Brain Cancer
by Isaac, 8, of Mississippi
Posted January 23, 2008

On January 5th, in Los Angeles, a black labrador retriever was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer. Vets tried to save his life. The owner actually found it laying on the ground. "Are you ok?" he said. But the dog was barking loudly. The owner rushed it to the vet.

Once they were at the vet, the dog started having seizures. The vet gave the dog CPR but it was still seizing. The owner waited frantically in the lobby for news of his dog. The vet came out and said, "Your dog is pounding. We gave him some medicine however it failed to reduce the dog's seizures."

Unfortunately, the dog died on the vet's table. There was nothing they could do for him. When the children received the news they broke into tears. They would miss their best friend. They incinerated the dog and kept his ashes to remember him by.

Caucus Kicks Off in the Hawkeye State
by Zoey, 9, of Iowa
Posted January 23, 2008

On January 3rd, crowds of people swarm into the media center in Des Moines for the caucus, to discuss the candidates: Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama.

"I would like a president who will be a role model and peacemaker, but actually does something about our environment" Zoey W. says. According to a poll created by Elliot S., most girls would like to have Hillary Clinton win, to show that girls can be just as good as boys in the government.

Kiernan W., age six, cares about the country, in a way. "I want a billion free train rides!!!" Kiernan, are you SURE that will help our country? "Hmmmm....how about free train rides for everyone?"

Thank you Kiernan. At the end of the day, the winner was Barack Obama. John Edwards finished second and Clinton finished in third.

Webkinz a Very Popular Website
by Ilana, 9, of Illinois
Posted January 23, 2008

Webkinz is having lots of upcoming surprises! On Webkinz you may see that the clubhouse that you may choose is having some repairs and will come back out in Fall (or maybe sooner). Today I have checked on Webkinz and there were about 84 winners of Bingoz!

Webkinz is making a safer way for kids to chat to other Webkinz friends. Today I went on and saw the tournament area was closed, probably for repair. I have no idea why. I am pretty sure that it will not take long at all for the tournament area to return for Webkinz to play. I don't think it will be more then a day.

Have you noticed that when ever you press on a game that is not the game of the day that in the 'champion' box it always says Webkinz world? Today when I went on there was no one in the champion box for the game of the day. The game of the day today is where's wacky?

The last thing I might have to say is that have you noticed if you have a bath tube if you squeak your rubber ducky next to your Webkinz your Webkinz will laugh? To keep your Webkinz happy any healthy you should, have it exercise, have it jump on a trampoline, feed it its favorite food, give it a bath, and visit it often. Oh yes and feed it healthy foods.

Hope you enjoy all the new things on Webkinz. The gorilla Webkinz is being expired and I think the rain deer Webkinz is being expired too. The Webkinz of the month this month in January is the lil 'kin golden retriever.

Why Can't We Kids Vote?
by Hanja, 9, of Canton, Ohio
Posted January 23, 2008

Why can't we kids vote? What's wrong with us kids voting? Why do we have to be at least 18 to vote? I asked my mom what her opinion was on should we be able to vote or not and why. She said, "I think kids should be able to do their own vote and then we parents will get your votes and then make a difference for kids".

I then asked my dad and he said "I agree with your mom". Kids have rights too!" I agree with my mom. We should have our own vote! So let's make a difference! If you can try to get in touch with your mayor. Ask to him or her to let you vote and then give your parents or someone who is going to vote your vote.

Let's work together to make a difference!

The Big Record
by Ingrid, 10, of Illinois

New England Patriots break a record for never losing a game!!! They just knocked the Colts out of first place. They took the win against the Giants, looks like Tom Brady led the beloved team from New England all the way this year!!

It was going back and forth through the whole game, Giants then Patriots, Giants, Patriots, then finally the Patriots took the lead!! Still we need to give credit to Brandon Jacobs on the Giants, and Randy Moss on the Patriots for scoring a lot of those lead taking touch downs.

At the end of this game in the 4th quarter, the Patriots made an amazing comeback with the old score 28 to 7 now changed to 14 to 30!!! You can never get enough of Patriot magic!!

Now the real question is, can this team make it all the way to the Super Bowl along with the second place team the Packers? Find out Sunday who is going to be!

Boston Legislative Aide Loses Jeopardy!
by Aaron, 12, of Whitehall, Pennsylvania
Posted January 23, 2008

All good things must come to a end they say. A legislative aide from Boston would have to agree. Dan Pawson lost Jeopardy on January 9 after 9 straight wins and winning a total of $170,902. Wow!

Dan first appeared on Jeopardy! on December 27,2007. He won $9700 on his first game. It was a tie on his second game. He remained Jeopardy champion into 2008. During his fifth, sixth, and seventh game he won by savvy wagering in the final round. Kristen Welsh beat him with $24,800.

Congratulations to Dan and all the people he defeated! I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week. Play this week's just the facts game.

Webkinz: A Fun Virtual World or a Rip Off!?
by Savannah, 10, of Wilmore
Posted January 23, 2008

Everyone knows of the so called "fun" virtual world called Webkinz. Many kids have at least one of the plush animals, but have you ever thought of the kids that are not lucky enough to have a Webkinz!

I did a poll at my school and 3/4 of the 5th grade have a Webkinz. One of the people I interviewed had 15 Webkinz! Have you ever thought what Webkinz could really be doing to you! Here are just a very few things Webkinz are doing wrong.

I researched and Webkinz had made over one million dollars in the year 2007! They should give at least 1/4 of that to a good cause! Have you ever thought of the kids that were not as fortunate to have a Webkinz! YOU could give your money to a good cause. It is your choice. You can make it a good day for the less fortunate or not!

Funky Hair Styles!
by Zaena, 10, of Florida
Posted January 23, 2008

Have you noticed the funky crazy hair styles and the dull boring hair styles? Some funky hairdos are: The Twisty Twizzler, The Straight Up Spike, or the Stiff Loop de Loop! Some dull hairdos are The Ponytail, Braids, or Flat 'n Straight.

Why are these dos funky fresh? These styles are different. These dos describe your personality, and that's what your hair should do! Your hair style shouldn't be someone else's style and usually that's what people do...THEY COPY!

Some hairstyles are dull, because EVERYONE wears that style! Use your IMaGinATIon and make up your own hair style(s), don't wear keep your "life" in a bun let your hair down and curl it!

Now, I'll tell the truth, right now I'm wearing a dull hairstyle. It's BRAIDS!!!!! Yes braids are cute, but they're not you. So be you and wear your own hairstyle(s)!

I've told you to be creative and wear your own hairstyles, but if you don't think you can do it or you like your style, then you can keep that style, because that style is you.

The Big Storm of 2008
by Sophia, 10, of Fremont, California

There is a powerful storm in California. It ruined people's day, but gave people a fabulous story.

There was a storm in California and it was chaos! The wind was gust and went up to 45-75 mph. The rain was big. It poured like crazy!! It rained soooo long that it caused floods. San Francisco had a possibility of flooding. All the bridges in the Bay Area and California were closed! The showers and gust went on and on for the rest of the week. Traffic here was unbearable!

Thunderstorms and rain kept on falling until Monday morning. People's power was gone, trees fell, and people's houses were destroyed. This storm is very different than the storm of January '06. This a report about the big storm of California January '08.

Do You Want To Spell?
by Morgan, 10, of Grove City, Ohio
Posted January 23, 2008

Have you always wanted to go to the school spelling bee? Or, is there one person who has always gone since kindergarten? Do you feel like that person should be banned from the spelling bee they've gone so many times? Well, I'm going to give you some tips on how to change that without banning him or her from the bee.

First, if you want to go to the bee talk to a trusted teacher and ask what you can do to improve your spelling skills. If that sounds a little embarrassing, talk to your parents, they probably went through the same feelings at one point in their lives. Second, if you still don't think you could make it, try asking your teacher or the teacher in charge of deciding who goes to the bee, for a copy of the words the teacher will be using to see who goes. Chances are, if you have been practicing the words for a while you'll have a better chance of going to the bee.

I went through a lot of the same stuff. When I was in first grade I realized the same person had gone in kindergarten as the person who was winning then. Sadly I realized that towards the end of the mini bees you have to see who goes to the real bee. So I practiced as much as I could in second grade and I got to go for the first time and it was very exciting. Ever since second grade to fourth grade( which I am in now) I have gone to the bee and plan to keep going for as long as I can.

So you see, if you just take my tips and follow your teachers and parents advice maybe next year you can become the person who everyone is grateful to for stopping the spelling champion. At least for that year.

The Weather

Posted January 23, 2008

As you know today is Sunday, January 6, 2008. It's 4:00 pm and the weather is dark, a little foggy, chilly and a 50% chance there will be a thunderstorm tonight.

What makes thunder? Why does it rain? Where does it rain the most? Who doesn't like rain? Thunder is made when two substances join together! it rains because we need it for the trees because trees give us oxygen and it needs rain so it will give us that oxygen to breathe! Well it rains mostly were there is a lot of water! A lot of people don't like rain!

Well that's the weather today. I'm Kirsten and I think you know a lot about weather. You've got to show what you know!

Happy New Year!
by Andrew, 9, of Arizona
Posted January 23, 2008

2007 is over, and it's 2008 already! You may have watched the ball drop in New York on TV and throw confetti. You probably stayed up until midnight and visited family. I had a great New Years and I hope you did too. My little sister loves New Year's, and I do too. A lot of people have different traditions for New Year's, but many have one question about it.

What is New Year's really about? I asked my friends and family what they thought it was about, and I got lots of answers. My little sister thought it was all about the decorations, confetti, and watching the ball drop. My little cousin Ryan didn't even care. Some of my older cousins thought it was about staying up late. Everyone has a different opinion about New Year's.

I really like visiting people and staying up late eating candy, but I know what it is really about. It is about making yourself a better you. I write New Year's resolutions just like a lot of people. I write them every year, but this year, I plan to hang mine on my wall so that I will remember them and actually do them.

So remember that when you make New Year's resolutions, you are making them for a reason. Because you have a new beginning. And that you are being a better you.
