The Mysteries of the Cosmos
James, 11, of Los Angeles
Posted July 23, 2008
Some scientist studied and discovered unbelievable, amazing things in space. Its about Black Holes, the Great Red Spot, Two Spiral Galaxies (names of the galaxies: NGC 2207 and IC 2163), etc. Sometime between 1890 to 1985 they studied it, because we didn't believe that there were black holes and other planets from a different galaxy. So scientist wanted to prove that those things really exist. This story is important because of recent findings. For example, there's ice on Mars, there's really a black holes, etc. But now we're trying to find clues if we could live on Mars, and if there's any life forms out in space.
Had you ever thought of if there were any life forms or maybe ice on Mars? Or what about the Black Hole which is a different galaxies that lead you to other planets in space. Or maybe if the sun will fade out and never shine again? Well scientist believe that the sun will fade out and will never shine again. About two years ago, scientist reported that there is really Black Holes in space. In fact, they found a Super massive Black Hole. A Super massive Black Hole is a black hole with a mass of hundreds of thousands to tens to billions of solar masses.
Before when I was a little boy about 3-5 years old, I thought that there were twisters in space, as well as supernovas. A supernova is a star-like feature filled with gas that self-destruct of a massive star called supernova 1987A (SN1987A), in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a nearby galaxy. I can't believe that there's really a supernova.
Remember when I said that if there were any tornados in space. Believe it or not but there are twisters in space. Its called "Giant Twisters in the Lagoon Nebula". This was discovered by NASA Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The image reveals a pair of one-half light-year long interstellar "twister," eerie funnels and twisted-rope structures in the heart of the Lagoon Nebula (Messier 8), which lies 5,000 light-years away in the direction of the constellation Sagittarius.
So kids and people out there that wants to know some recent discoveries in space, just read my news here and you'll know some recent discoveries that you didn't know yet.
Shark Scare at Martha's Vineyard
Marlese, 11, of Pheonix, Arizona
Posted July 23, 2008
In 1975, the movie Jaws was filmed on the small island of Martha's Vineyard. This year, though, there are real sharks, and they have been sighted off the coast of the following beaches:
Moshup Beach
South Beach
State Beach
Menempsha
On State Beach, though, it was a hoax played by a man who wanted the beach to himself. This sneaky action, though, back-fired when he told a lifeguard the lie to get everyone out of the water, and the clever guard closed the beach. Why did the man do that?!
Be assured, though, that the sharks will most likely stay in the deep parts of the sea, and that The Martha's Vineyard Animal Control will close the beach if there is a confirmed shark sighting. Stay in the shallows, everyone!
Remember, the chances of a shark attack are two hundred fifty million to one, so don't think that the scene will end up like 'Jaws'!
Fun With Fay

Just several days ago, a new exhibit at The Allentown Art Museum opened, called "William Wegman: Fay." The exhibit, unlike most other main exhibitions at the museum, consists of photographs, not paintings or sculptures. The entire exhibition includes 57 pictures.
The exhibit is full of photographs of the same dog, Fay Ray, in different fashions, styles and more. For example, there is a series of photographs taken over the course of a day titled "Fay Day." Another example is a picture called "Cover," featuring a dog holding a book. The book was actually held by an assistant that was well hidden behind the dog. A really goofy picture called "Harvest" includes the dog wearing a hat and covered with things such as plastic fruit.
Another half of the exhibit includes fabric tapestries by Linda Lee Alter. Not only does this exhibit include dogs, but it includes a wide variety of other animals. That explains why there is not only dog-themed areas in Art Ways, an interactive room near the main exhibitions, but also other animals, including cows, fish and more.
In my opinion, the exhibitions are very good. And Art Ways is very creative. I recommend that if you live in the Lehigh Valley, located in Pennsylvania, that you visit the museum to see the exhibitions. Admission is $5, plus the regular museum admission, but members get in free. The exhibits will last from June 8 - September 7, 2008.
Swimming with Sharks
Libby, 12, of Harrisburg

How would you feel if someone told you that you were swimming with sharks in a pool? Freaked right? That's what a few swimmers felt this morning.
A few swimmers came out to swim at a swimming pool near Cronulla Beach in the land down under, Australia, around 6 A.M. today. They didn't see the shark swimming around them because it was still dark. Fisheries officers netted the shark and then released it back out into the ocean unharmed. The swimmers were shaken, but unharmed.
Animal Abuse: Right or Wrong?
Savannah, 13, of Canada

Animal abuse -- is it right or wrong? We must have all at some time in our lives had a cat, dog, hamster, fish, etc. But some people abuse their animals. The most common is in dogs and cats. People abuse these innocent animals leaving them to suffer some atrocity. But who does this? What do they do? Where do they do it? When do they do it? And the number one question is, why do they do it? How come these poor innocent animals are being mistreated?
Animals are being hurt everywhere. And at this very moment while I'm writing an animal is getting abused by it's owner. It's horrible to know that this is happening, when they are innocent and they don't know what's going on. Some of these animals are being hurt for money. Yes, I did say money. Some people pay to abuse their animals like in fights.
They shouldn't be mistreated for something like money. If the owners don't want their pets, then give them to an animal shelter, like the ASPCA. They take animals and can put them up for adoption, so others can have the joy of taking care of a cat or a dog.
If you know that an animal is being hurt, tell a adult that you trust. They can help save animal's lives, so there will be no more suffering or abuse.
My Summer Vacation
James, 11, of Los Angeles

Why do I have summer vacation?
Why couldn't I be in summer school?
When are we going back to school?
How will I become a better student in class?
Who's going to be my 5th grade teacher?
Well, let me tell you about my summer vacation. I'm pretty much having a lot of fun at home. I could play my cool electronics, for example, my PSP, my PS2, my Gameboy (pretty much it sucks now to play with it), my Nintendo DS, my XBOX 360, and last but not least, my Wii. Also, I could do whatever I want. Usually outside in public I sometimes get in trouble. In conclusion, my vacation summer is turning out to be fun.
Remember when I said before that my summer vacation is turning out to be fun. Well, that was at first. After one month of vacation, I started to get bored. Actually, I really hate vacations. I just want to be in school learning and seeing my friends. Also, I really love lots and lots and LOTS of homework. Whoever is reading this might think about this person as a nerd or a strange kid. Whoever is thinking about this is correct. I am a strange and nerdy kid.
Animals Are Part of the World too!
Shalaka, 10, of North Andover

So many people cruelly kill animals. I think that they are part of this world too. They need food and water too.
People kill them for food, and manufacturing. Some people kill dolphins just by trapping tuna.
My sister says, "What? I love dolphins!" People use animals illegally too. They kill snakes and cow to make shoes. You can also make a leather couch by beating, killing and dying it's fur. "We will have some quality sofas now," says a furniture store lady. That made me sad to know what they do to cows.
I love animals. If you do too, don't use a product that is tested on animals. I don't get it. Why would people do that?
Please buy products that have a picture of an animal crossed out on it. So many animals become endangered. The Lowland Gorilla, Polar bears, bald eagles, is the most endangered species.
Our world needs animals. We want all animals to stay alive. Don't slaughter them. They need to live. Just think about it, our world having only one of each breed of animal.

Global warming is killing Polar Bears. I want them to live in Antarctica. I also want them to have a future. If they die out we will NEVER see them. They are cool animals. Time is running out to save them. We need to act now.
Is the Ice Age Coming Back?
James, 11, of Los Angeles
Posted July 23, 2008
1. How will the Ice Age come back?
2. Why does scientist think that the Ice Age will come back?
3. When will the Ice Age come back?
4. Will humans be extinct like other ancient animals before when the Ice Age come back?
5. Will the Ice Age be colder than before?
Did you know that the Ice Age might come back? Well, that may become true. Scientist believe that it may come back. They said that it might get colder. Before the temperature went down to about -300 to -400 degrees Fahrenheit or between -350 to -450 degrees. Now scientist are stating that it might even get colder, approximately -500 to -550 degrees, or maybe even -0, which is called an Absolute Zero.
Barack Obama Taking Charge?
Skye, 12, of Hughesville, Pennsylvania
Posted July 23, 2008
Senator Barack Obama is taking on the challenge of running for president, ready for the great responsibility of leading our great country. The only question is ... is he ready?
Obama clearly stated that he is ready to take on the challenge. The only thing is some people are not so certain about it. A close friend to Barack states that, "He is like a hawk ready to strike the blow". Obama has stolen the hearts of many people, but not enough to withstand his vote as president. The only thing left to do is wait and see if he can win the hearts of more citizens to pass the election.
Azalea Open Figure Skating Competition

On July 12, 2008 a beginners figure skating competition took place. Many people competed in this competition. They had great results. Everyone either got a medal or a ribbon.
The Azalea Open figure skating competition lasted from 8:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. Many people attended. For some people this was there first competition, like me, and some people had some experience. It was design for beginners so they would get the hang of a competition. Children as young as 4 years old competed, as well as the 40 year olds.
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners got medals, and 4th, 5th, and 6th won ribbons. There were winners in each category. Everyone did a great job, and had lots of fun.
Obama vs. McCaine
Lauren, 8, of Charlotte
Posted July 23, 2008
Barack Obama is in the lead for president. John McCaine is doing a good job too. But only one can win, and many people are dying to know who's going to be president. All will know on November 4, 2008. People are still putting signs in their windows promoting either Barack or John.
Now let's get this straight. A lot of news shows like Morning Joe, Glenn Beck and The View have been talking about how the election is becoming a nail-biter.
Citizens across the nation, did you know that if Barack Obama wins, we'll have the first ever black president in the whole world? As far as I've seen Barack might win but you know you can't judge a book by it's cover.
