State Math Contest
Kirk, 14 of Utah County
Posted March 19, 2008
The Utah State Math Contest is going to be held at the University of Utah on Tuesday, March 18, and middle-schoolers in Utah are preparing their brains for the grueling test. Scholarships and prize money are among the incentives.
Some people think the contest is nerdy, and that if you join, that automatically qualifies you for geekhood. I disagree. You really can't end up worse than you started because anybody who qualifies gets to go to the University all day, during a school day. Not only that, but the test takes approximately two hours to finish, leaving about three or four hours to do whatever you want. Activities on the campus include bowling, video games, and if you actually are a geek, world class science facilities. You also get to eat lunch at the U, meals that are free and include a soda. So why shouldn't you attend!
Extending School the Year
Citlali, 12, of Escondido, California
Posted March 19, 2008
Could it be true or just a rumor about extending out the school year even more? Extending school even more then it all ready is? How? Where? Why? Those questions might be rolling through your heads. Well, let me tell you some thing. There have been rumors about the school district trying to enlarge the school year, but not only I think they are rumors. All this people I interviewed think the same.
13-year-old Jovana Gudio thinks it is just hall talk. This is what she said and what she thinks, "I think this is just to scare us. They can't do that it would be unfair!" She isn't the only one that thinks that. 13-year-old Jacky Ramirez says, "It wouldn't help at all. It would just make things worse people would stop going to school and no one would be educated!"
Well there you have it. We just confirmed it was just a rumor. But if it would be real, would you be determind to come to school? Well this is the news. This is reporter Citlali who brought you this story!
Too Much Tech?
Grace, 11, of Newtown, CT
Posted March 19, 2008
Nowadays, many kids wake up, go to school, come home and get on the computer. Or DS, television, gameboy, or video games. Most think that all this new high-tech stuff is really cool and we should use it. But the truth is, are all these new games taking away from the important stuff such as health and grades?
First of all, if you get home and then go straight to IM, when can you get your homework done? "I do it while I'm watching TV and listening to my i-Pod," said one student. "It helps me relax and get the job done." However, even though quite a few will say this, it has been scientifically proven that humans cannot multitask. Go ahead, look it up. Also, having too much 'box-time' can damage your eyes and make you tired, which may take a few points off that huge math test tomorrow.
Second of all, which is more important: your own health, or your own version of Halo III? I was thinking health, though some may see it another way. How many times have you heard this: "Why should I worry about all that now? It doesn't seem to affect me. I'll wait until it does; then I'll make sure I am healthy." I'm guessing a million. You may not know this, but even now, within your youth, you can damage your wellness drastically. For instance, if you don't brush your teeth, you may be afraid to smile at your grandchildren (a.k.a. you lose your teeth). If you do not eat those disgusting zucchinis, maybe you'll go blind. See what I'm saying? Take care of yourself now, and you won't have to worry later.
Well, I've said what has needed to be. If you still think your television is more precious than your life, go ahead. I don't mind, as long as your happy. But, seeing you read this, I hope that you'll look at this new wave of computers differently.
Why Don't You Ace The Test?
Sofia, 10, of NJ
Posted March 19, 2008
Do you sometimes fail the test? I'm in fifth grade and I took my Mid Terms in January. So I had to get prepared. So all of my 5 classes -- Language Arts, Science, Reading, Social Studies, and Math -- we were doing pretests and reviewing what we learned. These are some tips to help you on special tests.
First, when it's a day before the tests always listen to the teacher. Just don't go there staring at the teacher daydreaming of how beautiful your hair is! Maybe during the class the teacher is going to give you some answers to the test when you don't notice. But the most important thing is that no matter if you listened to the teacher in whatever she said you have to study, study, study!
Although, maybe after 20 minutes of studying you get tired. Well here is what you can do. If you have a planner or a piece of paper you can write the most important facts about what you were studying about. Then, maybe when you have time you can study a little bit more. I always do it and every time I get my test back I always get an 80 or above on my test. If I can do it you can do it as well.
These are just a few tips on acing the test. But not always you are going to ace the test but maybe you will. I hope these tips can help you and hope you have fun with it too.
Freddy Jones: Hamster Tales
Jimi, 9, of Arizona
Posted March 19, 2008
I am homeschooled and know a girl who is already working on a rough draft for a book! It is great and about a stuffed hamster. Her name is Kim. She is also nine years old. It is supposed to be about her stuffed hamster. Her dad and friends laugh out loud when they read it.
"I just love writing," Kim says. All her friends like her, book, and even her little sister. The hamster's name is Freddy. He wants to gain all power over the world, and his friends help him. In the book, the hamsters gang up against R.C. (a human character), make friends with each other, fall in love, and so much more.
My favorite part is when the hamster named Kyle has his hair done all funky! I asked Kim how she got the idea. "I get ideas from everything," Kim replies. Kim is truly an amazing writer, at least for a nine-year-old.
Bishop Dead!!!!
Marcs, 10 of Toronto

A Chaldean bishop was found dead on a road. He was taken hostage by Muslim rebels. The bishop died and other Chaldean martyrs die because they want peace in Iraq. It has been a long time since Iraq was a peaceful place. And I for one do not want this to happen.
When the bishop was taken hostage the Muslim rebels wanted half a million dollars! Every church in Toronto well pray for the bishop and Chalden martyrs. Don't let Chaldeans die because I'm one.
Save Our Schools

Cutting Classes?!!! Firing teachers?!! Why is the governor doing this to us?!! The San Diego government is going to cut classes, and fire teachers next year! And it's not fair! My violin teacher said she's not going to be here at our school anymore! My math teacher and janitor too!!
They say it's because they don't want to waste money on lots of education. California spends 40% of their money on education.
Some kids are even starting a petition! A few days ago at my school these group of teachers, parents, and students were at the front of the school chanting ''SAVE OUR SCHOOLS!! SAVE OUR SCHOOLS!!'' And the whole 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade were starting a petition to keep the janitor of our school!
I hope the governor changes his mind! My friends and I are really sad about this :(
Lunchtime: The Real Deal
Hayley, 11, of California
Posted March 19, 2008
You know the TV show where the main character(s) deal with bad cafeteria food? Well, it's not just TV shows--this stuff happens in real life! Whether it's too gross, too fattening, or too inedible, lunchtime is becoming a dread to students around the country. Even I have experienced this food dilemma! And I will give you information on why cafeterias should serve better food.
First and foremost, kids might think the food is gross because it LOOKS gross! For instance, my school serves pepperoni pizza. Sure, it SOUNDS appetizing, but it's a very disliked food to my schoolmates. Why? Because it's all greasy! Grease is bad because it can open up your pores, and you could acne. Not to mention the grease DRIPS IN IT'S PLASTIC BAG! That's right. And we have MOLD on our turkey sandwiches! (Feel free to barf anytime.) A schoolmate of mine says, "It's so gross! I never eat it.".
Secondly, the food is too fattening. Of course, not ALL food is fattening, but not ALL of it is healthy, right? Students at my school always buy cookies, brownies, cinnamon rolls, or PopTarts at snack, which isn't a very good breakfast. Cookies, brownies, and stuff like that are more for dessert. A REAL breakfast should be something like some cereal, Rice Krispie treats (those aren't that fattening), toast, or maybe an English muffin. Schools should make healthy revisions of the sweets they serve. Instead of cookies, how about a fruit salad? And instead of brownies, why not have a granola bar instead? Give yourself some energy so you won't snooze in class, or fail the mile in PE!
Lastly, the food might just taste bad! Maybe it's over-cooked, under-cooked, or maybe there's just something about that you can't put your finger on. You should get back in line, and ask the lunch ladies if you could exchange it for something else.
And if you have any further issues with your lunch, write a letter to your principal, and tell her/him why it should be changed. If you want, you can even write a petition. I mean, I'm sure some of your schoolmates feel the same way, right?
Air Pollution, What Do You Think?
Cynnamon, 14, of California

Air pollution, what do you think about it? What do you think about air pollution? Many people create air pollution every single without even noticing it. Others just think that it is not a serious matter, but it is nothing is worse than having bad air. This harms people and animals along with plants.
I was walking down my street one day and I saw a pop bottle of "Mountain Dew" right in front of my friends house. Do you think I kept it there or picked it up threw it away in the trash can? I did neither. I recycled it the world needs to recycle more that can help pollution in the air.
My friends mom smokes in the house. One day when we were about to do our one-mile jog, my friend and I were stretching. When we were half way there, my friend was heaving for air and could not really catch her breath. We were not even close to our one-mile jog and she was out of breath. I was so scared because I had no clue on what was wrong with her.
My friend has lung cancer and her mom still smokes, not around her, but she still smokes in the house. Her mom, when she smokes, it pollutes the air and other peoples breathing space. This is what my friend Clair has to say about lung cancer, "hi, my name is Clair. I was diagnosed with lung cancer last year, but I learned that my life is still worth living. Every time I see anything on the ground or someone smoking, I laugh and I think, is it really worth dying over something that is as easy as putting out a cigarette or as easy as throwing trash away or recycling it?" Wow Clair, I really don't know. You should tell me "What do you think?"

Baby Phat

I am here with the News Flash 5 news crew to get the scoop on Baby Phat which was founded by Kimora Lee Simmons. She is the wife of Russell Simmons, who founded Phat Farm, which is a clothing line for men, young adults and teens. Phat Farm also includes cologne and lotion etc. Baby Phat was founded and made off of Phat Farm, which got good replies from men. Kimora Simmons thought that she would get the same response from women and she was right.
Little did she know that she would get a great response from women across the world. After she realized that all of the marketers wanted to get more of her product, she made her own clothing line as well as her own perfume. Women love the look and as well as the smell of the perfume. When she launched her own doll, many little kids wanted it and adults wanted to collect it. Once her own TV show aired, she had views all over the U.S. and they got to know what life is like in the fab. Lane of Kimora Lee Simmons.
Kimora's as well as Russell Simmons house aired twice on MTV's Cribs. Everyone thought their house was beautiful and their luxury apartment was a delight as well, in New York city. Kimora and Russell have two little girls who are looking ahead to a bright future who may be just like their mommy Kimora one day.
I am here with News Flash 5 news crew. An anonymous friend wants to say that she loves this product and home. She loves it every time she goes to the store, she buys a Kimora item. Oh wow that is a lot of things! She goes shopping all the time. Just the help of my friend is helping Kimora get richer every single day. What do you think about that? Do you think that it is fair? It's all about your word on News Flash 5 news.

Wade, 9, of the United Kingdom

The UK's stormy weather is set to continue with warnings that
more gales and floods could be on the way.
On Monday, strong winds and rain caused problems for travellers, and around 12,000 homes were left without any electricity. Emergency services said trees and power lines were brought down in the south-west of England. But weather forecasters say the storms could be moving further north and are warning winds could reach 80 mph.
On Monday, flights at some London airports were cancelled, and
speed restrictions were put in place on rail lines.
Roads were closed because of flooding, and bridges were shut
because of the high winds. So far the floods haven't been as bad as some people feared they would be, but there are warnings that more could be on the way.
Keep It Simple
Helen, 11, of Miami

The title is keep it simple because you have to be normal. Also you don't have to show off. If you don't keep it simple, people will think your plastic. Saying, for example, my shoes were $150 or my clothes was from the mall called..... So that's when people start hating you and don't want to be your friend no more. That's why you have to keep it simple.
You also have to keep it simple because you don't want people to start talking about you or some people talk behind your back and then other people tell you what the other people told them about you. That's why your only friend in the world is God because he doesn't laugh at you when you are in trouble or talk behind your back. Well I hope you got it keep it simple!!!!!!
