Kentucky Derby -- Is It Inhumane or Fun?
Royse, 12, of Pittsburgh
Posted May 7, 2008

Did you watch the Kentucky Derby? Well, it was on Saturday, May 3. More than 150,000 people went to the festivities. It's a horse race that is only, on an average, two minutes long. Spectators bet on the horses to win and sit back to enjoy the show. But did you ever think about the poor horses?

Those horses are of a specific breed and are bred for MONEY. The owner's breed horses to receive the money people bet. The horses train and run very fast for two minutes of fame and fortune. These horses, in my opinion, get to have no life. No time just to play or such. They always train and have to live in certain conditions that a normal horse wouldn't.

Think of the horses' life like this. What if YOU where born for money and the entertainment of other people? They clearly do not like to run fast and hard. Have you ever seen on TV after a horse race how tired and beat they look? I don't think it's right.

At the 134th derby (2008), Big Brown won. Something horrible happened on the second turn of the race. Eight Belles, the only female horse in the race, collapsed. After a few minutes an ambulance came out and the on-staff vet examined her front legs. She ran so fast and hard, she broke her two front ankles. The vet said she couldn't even stand so they had to put her to sleep which is called euthanization. Her owner was quoted to say: "There was no way to save her. She couldn't stand. She ran an incredible race. She ran the race of her life."

They don't sound very sad, do they?

Well, many horses are hurt and euthanized during races. Now that you know a little more, what do think?

Mother's Day and How to Make Your Mother Happy!
Emily, 10, of Tennessee
Posted May 7, 2008

On May 11, we celebrate Mother's Day. Why do Mom's get a special day, and how did this tradition get started? Other countries celebrate Mother's Day, but in America we hold our day on the second Sunday in May. It became an official holiday in some states as early as 1912, but didn't become a national holiday until President Woodrow Wilson declared it in 1914 as a way for Americans to honor those mothers whose sons died in war. Today, we honor all mothers on this day.

Some of the ways people celebrate Mother's Day are to use the day to treat their Mom's to something special. like buying gifts or flowers. Some people take their Moms (and Grandmas) out to lunch or dinner. The perfect gift is whatever you think will make your mother feel special and appreciated.

Mother's Day doesn't have to be about gifts, but can be about appreciating the things a mom does for you! Our church is even having a Mother's Day poem read by the children and a song sung for them! You can do this at home by making your Mom a special card with a poem or note written by you.

Think about it, they cook, clean and take care of you. They also drive you to school and to dance classes, football, other sports games or practices. They do so much and deserve the day they get! So this Mother's Day, remember to appreciate your Mom or Grandma! Or both!

I also want to send out a special Happy Mother's Day to my Mom, and to my Gigi and MawMaw!

I think that everyone should just chill about Miley because she took a picture with her back out. Now everyone is going crazy about it. There are so many more bad things that a person can do that is much worse than that.

First Vanessa (who plays Gabriella in HSM) took nude pictures of herself. All Miley did was take a picture with her back out. Now if you saw the Vannessa pictures, and compared it with the Miley's, which one would be worse, Vannessa no doubt. I'm not saying Vannessa is a bad person. I'm saying that everybody does something that they shouldn't be doing. There's more pressure for those who are famous.

So if you were a famous pop star, and you took a picture that is bad, and everybody is acting all nuts and stuff, how would you feel? I would feel bad and ashamed of myself. It would just make me want to cry.

So people, leave Miley alone. She has a great voice, and I look up to the great things she's done. She is a great actress and I want to be like her. So the next time someone famous does something wrong, put yourself in their shoes.

Look, if you don't be good, you can be in big trouble. If you love being BAD, say goodbye to fun. At school, NO FUN. At home NO FUN. You have to be good.

To be good here are some steps: 1.) Don't talk back. 2.) Fallow directions. 3.) Don't talk when you are NOT asked. 4.) Respect others. 5.) The best step of all BE GOOD!

You get my point. Be good. You won't regret it.

What I am trying to say is that some schools are not giving the children the education that they need. Plus some are just plain boring. Why I am saying this? Because we need better education and more. Basically most schools do not supply children with fun activities. I am saying this to all of you students who are out there who feel the same. I AM asking you to please just ACT NOW!

Now what I need you to do is to help me and do your job to make this world a better place. All I'm saying is just make the right choices, because what you do can change other people's lives.

I want to thank you very much for reading this, and i really think you all rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ethanol: Good or Bad?
Zachary, 11, of Utah
Posted May 7, 2008

Many people think that ethanol is the best thing we can use. They say that it helps stop global warming. But guess what? It's causing a food crisis AND it doesn't even help the environment.

When a lot of the corn in the U.S. is put into ethanol, that means that there is less food for people to eat. That means that the price of food goes up, and poor people have trouble finding food that is cheap enough for them to eat. Isn't that awful?!

If it's causing so many problems, you'd think that people would have to have a good reason for using it. Actually, according to a recent UN study, ethanol makes global warming WORSE because you use about the same amount of gas just to make ethanol. Do the thing that's good for the Earth? Just say NO to ethanol.

The Los Angeles Lakers

Lakers are my favorite team and I'll tell you why they're my favorite basketball team. It's my dad's favorite team. Shack used to be on the Lakers' team, and he helps the Lakers A LOT. But now, he quit the Lakers. So, the Lakers has another good basketball player, who I think helped us beat Michigan.

The basketball player was seven or eight feet tall. He was a little skinny, but he was still tall. He helped because he practiced A LOT. I'm seven years old and that's what I think about the Lakers.

You are gonna talk to Giovanni now.

Hi there, Giovanni here. The Lakers don't always win. Other family members want them to win all the time. Me? I don't care. I'm three years old and that's what I think about the Lakers.

I agree with Olivia and that other girl last week. Hannah does not sing well! My friend Megan has the CD and she said that on one of the songs, it is actually a BOY singing. The show is not good either.

I do not like Hannah Montana at ALL and neither should you.

Boys and Girls Dropping Out of School
Emily, 9, of Miami, Florida

Boys and girls following other students that are doing the wrong thing. If they jump off a cliff, would you. Parents give your kids lessons, speeches, and make it a priority to do there homework before anything. Should they ask if they could play outside, ask if their homework was done. My brother, Carlos, wants to drop out because he wants to work more hours to get more money. Don't be like my sister friend, Catherine, she lost 3 YEARS of school and she isn't so smart, nor my brother. Catherine was lucky she still got her high school diploma.

If you want to be a singer, dancer, model, or anything else you have to GET AN EDUCATION, and work hard for what you want. What I'm saying is the truth. Parents, their education lies in your hands. Make them go to school. There are no excuses except for when they are sick.

Don't let let your children end up in JAIL, or SHOT, or DEAD. Tell your kids to be themselves.

"I don't how I got the idea!" exclaimed Jessica. "To be honest, a friend and I discussed it at home." continued Jessica. The Charity Week was amazing. Healthy Eating, Exercising, & Body Facts

Kids all around the world have heard about "jump for heart day"! It's a day when you jump to get your body moving. Today they came to our school to show eating "positive" food and exercising. Did you know that there are 4000 chemicals in a cigarette? Wow, that's a lot!! They even said that it's good eating 7 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday. They also told us where the money goes and how they divide it into three ways and they are as follows: research to find a cure for heart diseases, for special equipment, and for sick people.

Did you know that your heart is a muscle and that it needs nutrients and oxygen so it can pump constantly. It beats over 10,000 times per day. If you live to be like 80 years old, that's 3 billion beats, wow!!! I never knew that. And that you should do at least 90 minutes of physical activity per day.

If you put all the blood vessels in your body together, they would stretch around the world 2 to 4 times! Did you know food is fuel? Just like a car needs gas to run, our body needs a variety of nutritious foods to keep it working properly. Eating nutritious foods keeps our body and mind going strong. Here's a thought. What makes jumping rope so great? It gets your heart pumping, builds strength and it improves coordination and balance. Research proves school-based skipping programs lead to healthier bones in adolescents in just 8 months.

Caution zone -- more and more children are being diagnosed with "grown up" diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes. The reality is inactive children with poor eating habits are headed for an unhealthy adulthood. In fact, our kids could be the first generation that has a shorter life expectancy than their parents!!!

  • I'm a small muscle in your body, the size of your fist, and I'm pumped. What am I?
    Your heart.
  • I'm red and flow throughout your body like a river. You only see me when you cut yourself. What am I?
    Your blood.
  • Last riddle -- you can't see me, but you can feel me. I keep the beat: lubdub, lubdub. You can find me on the inside of your wrist. What am I?
    Your pulse.

  • I hope you learned some cool facts About your body. Here are three riddles.

Why Are People Saying Bad Things About Miley Cyrus and Hate Her?
    Christine, 11, of Toronto
    Posted May 7, 2008

Well I think people are wrong. People should not judge people about the way they look, (ex. their skin color, the way they sing, dance, etc.). I think that people should just judge only about there personality. I agree with Anna from Massachusetts because I think that people should LEAVE MILLEY ALONE AND MIND THERE OWN BUSINESS!! I disagree with Zoey from Tennessee because I think she is wrong for saying that Miley Cyrus stinks and is a bad singer. Even though people think that she stinks they should be more considerate and keep it to themselves. I think that people are just jealous.

People just make fake gossip to make that person embarrassed. Well people shouldn't create fake stuff about Miley Cyrus because that is just mean and inconsiderate. To some people she may stinks but to me, she "ROCKS". She is a good roll model because she sings about how "NOBODY'S PERFECT" and no one is.

    New World Record!

David Blaine broke the world record for holding his breath for the longest amount of time. He did so on the Oprah Winfrey show on April 13, 2008. He said that he did all of these stunts, because he wants to go to the maximum of human ability. The previous record was sixteen minutes and thirty two seconds, and he beat it with seventeen minutes and four seconds.

David Blaine had to get fresh oxygen for fifteen minutes. He did so by going under water with a tube that had fresh oxygen! Once he struggled and wiggled around, and the life guards assisted him, he was ready to jump in.

The cistern of water he jumped in to was a big globe of water. It took days to prepare the cistern for the Oprah Winfrey show in Chicago. The globe looked like it was a big clear hamster ball. The crowd burst in to cheers when he got up. The previous record was made in February 2008.

When he was in the big globe his heart rate was 125. David Blaine's personal trainer thought when he was in the water for a minute or two his heart rate would be back to 50. Why this is so important is because the faster your heart beats you need to breathe more. His personal trainer was wrong, his heart rate got up to 130. He said after he achieved this goal, he wants to beat the world record for staying the longest in the wilderness without food!

    Keeping in Style

Have you heard about some new fads around your school? It's so confusing about keeping up with all the things that are ''hot'' around school, or what shows you should watch, or even what clothes you should buy! I remember when watching Sponge Bob was in, but now it's the least watched show in the planet. I have some tips on how to always keep up in the style of today.

First, even if you are the last one to get what's hot, don't spend all your time, money, and thoughts on all about something that is most likely out of date in about a week or so.

Secondly, always think ahead about what COULD be cool in the future. Who knows you could even start a fad yourself and it could be the coolest one yet.

Lastly, but most important, even if you're not the coolest kid around the block, you have to feel good in your own skin. You have to feel comfortable about the fad. Enjoy it and be happy.

    The Boy's Lost Dog!

Last week Jake lost his dog in the park. He went to the park with the dog named Rufus. He was walking with when saw the girl named Gwen that he has a crush on. She was talking to her friend Ashley so he went over there to talk to Gwen and, when did start talking to Gwen, his dog slipped away. When he finally realized that the dog was gone he went looking for Rufus but he couldn't find him. So asked Gwen to help look for Rufus his dog. They looked everywhere, but there was no sign of Rufus.

And so they looked again but they still couldn't find Rufus. Jake went home hoping to Rufus there, but Rufus wasn't. He went in his bedroom and looked under his bed, but he didn't see Rufus there. Later on his mom came from work and Jake explained what happen to Rufus. She was shocked, she made posters with Rufus's picture on them. He went to put the posters all over town to stores and poles.

The posters had Jake's home phone number on it so if anyone saw Rufus, they would call Jake and his mother. The poster has Rufus's information on it, so a week later, they had a phone call and someone found Rufus near the middle school where Jake goes. Jake said he was going to get Rufus there and he told his mom about the call. She was so happy that someone have found Rufus she said she was going to give him a ride there. They arrived near the middle school saw a guy standing there next to Rufus. Jake jumped out of the car. He was so happy to see Rufus. He walked near the guy and talked to him. He took Rufus and said thank you and he put a new collar on him. Rufus was also happy to see his master.

He put Rufus in the car and got in the car and they drove off to their house. When they got there, Jake jumped out off the car and took Rufus with him. They got inside the house and he went in the living room. He picked up the phone and called Gwen, the girl he really liked, and he told her that he found Rufus his dog. She was also happy to hear the good news. Then he said, "I have something to tell you. I have a crush on you. I really like you more then just a friend." She said, "Okay, that's not a bad thing. I like you to the same way you like me. I also have a crush on you and I'm glad it's out on the open."

The next day she came over to his house and they did their homework with each other. They decided to go on a date with each other so she was happy about that. The next week after that, they decided to continue to date each other and he asked her to be his girlfriend.
