Save the Open Space!
Eliza, 10, of PA
Posted June 18, 2008
Many people are turning beautiful farmland into places for houses. People need to have a place to live, but there are many vacant houses and houses for sale that people could buy instead. What do you think?
For instance, there's a baseball field in this town that I know. Lots of kids play there, because some don't have enough room for playtime in their yards. There's a Rite-Aid store a few blocks down, and they want to buy the field to build an even bigger Rite-Aid there! There's been a fight going on for months, kids making petitions and posters to save their play area. There is also a Sleepy's near a mall I go to every once and a while. I counted, and in the span of about 4 blocks, there an about 6 MATTRESS PLACES! If places like Sleepy's would just stay in ONE building, they would save a lot of space for other businesses. With more buildings for businesses to buy, they won't build stuff in fields.
Businesses going crazy with "MORE! MORE! I NEED MORE!" like some little kid in Toys R Us. If people need a house, they should open their eyes and look at all the houses for sale around them. I understand that sometimes people need a certain kind of house or certain size, but if people keep on being picky, what would happen to Earth. There would be no more space for animals, which would mean no more hamburgers or hot dogs or meat, and only very lucky people would have pets. There would hardly be any room for trees, and before we knew it, the sky would become a permanent orange like the polluted New York City skies. Now, do you want that to happen?
If everyone would think more about Earth than themselves, we could all live in harmony with animals, plants, and high trees, their branches reaching up to the sky, not only looking beautiful, but helping the air be filled with oxygen and overcoming carbon dioxide, the left-behind devil of factories. Speaking of factories, if stores would stay in ONE building and create chains more than a few blocks away, we could conquer the evil greed of us humans, and enjoy the open space we have left.
Why Are Gas Prices Increasing?
Kenzi, 12, of Louisville, Kentucky
Posted June 18, 2008
Why exactly are gas prices going WAY up? Does it have anything to do with summer, or is it because of the war with Iraq?
In September of 2007, gas was only costing about two dollars and sixty-two cents. As of right now, June 14, in Kentucky, gas is up to four dollars and fifteen cents, and changing every second. In Kansas, it is three dollars and ninety-one cents, in Missouri, three dollars and eighty-four cents, in New York, four dollars and twenty-four cents.
Why such the difference? No one seems to know. It could be because the different gas companies are buying the gas for different prices in different places. That would cause the prices to go up. It could be because gas companies need more money so they charge us more to fuel our cars. A lot of families, including my own, are busy and require more then one vehicle. That makes those families buy more and more gas, thus spending A LOT of the money saved for educations, vacations, and much more. The grocery store, Kroger, is giving ten cents off every one hundred dollar grocery bill for gas in Kentucky. The little measly ten cents makes a HUGE difference for families with lots of children.
But why is the price raising? Some people say that the upcoming summer has something to do with the increasing prices in gas. People are going on vacation and will buy more gas, thus giving the gas companies more money. But, the more gas we buy, the more the USA has to buy. It also could be because of the war in Iraq. We get most of our oil for gas from around there, and since we are in war with them and they OBVIOUSLY don't like us, they could be raising the price to get more money from us, thus causing the USA to lose money and they gain it.
Will the prices ever go down? We can't tell. But we REALLY need them to! Some kids won't be able to get a good education if the prices keep rising. Amusement parks will get less and less tourists because of the high costs of gas and not being able to afford to get to those place, let alone pay for a hotel or the park. We need to do something. But the question is... what?
Comparing Gas Prices In Two States
Janelle, 13, of Wisconsin
Posted June 18, 2008
Why are gas prices so high in some states and so low in others? Now-a-days, a kid like me looks at the gas prices and begins to think a big question! Will we be able to afford gas when we're sweet sixteen?
When my family and I drove to Lake In The Hills, IL, I looked at the gas prices at different stations. In Wisconsin unleaded regular cost $3.98 and diesel cost $4.39. In Lake In The Hills, the lowest unleaded regular cost 4.19, the lowest diesel cost $4.79. The highest unleaded regular cost $4.23 and the Highest diesel cost a whoppin' $4.99. These prices are a little crazy.
Next I asked my 10 year old sister a few questions:
*note 1 is me, 2 is my sister
1: "what do you think of the gas prices?"
2: "It's a whole lot of money."
1: "What do you think is the result of the gas prices?"
2: "We will all go bankrupt."
1: "Are the gas prices a good thing or a bad thing and why?"
2: "Bad, 'cause we're losing all our money!"
1: "Thanks sis, for tellin' it like it is!"
A special thanks goes to my sister, friends and my mom and dad. They're the ones who encouraged me to tell it like it is. One more special thanks goes to you readers; for reading this article.
Gas, Gas, Gas
Lydia, 11, of Colorado

Gas prices have sky rocketed in the past weeks! Not only are the gas prices up, but food as well. Considering you need GAS to transport food from place to place! Many of the people in Colorado are not only struggling but people in other states are struggling too, such as California!
One of our president candidates comments they paid ten dollars for one gallon! That is almost more than twice as much in CO or even WA.
And that is the news for this week. Check back next week to learn more about going GREEN!
Stop Complaining About Gas
Anonymous, 11
Posted June 18, 2008
Sure we all know gas prices are going up, but do you ever stop to think that maybe the president doesn't have complete control over it?
First of all, we import oil. Thus, the oil companies have to pay for it, raising the prices. This is because WE DON'T DRILL FOR IT. Come on, we need to be energy independent. Okay, this is where the president has some power, but still not all.
Second of all, we rely too much on fossil fuels. Wake up and smell the new ways to power everyday items, such as, fuel cells, electricity (i.e., electric/hybrid cars), nuclear power, wind, and geothermal power.
Finally, stop wasting it all. Think about not leaving the lights on when you leave a room, keeping the TV on when no one is watching. Stop it! So the next time you hear someone complain about rising gas prices ask them, "are YOU doing anything to lower them?"
What We're Doing About Gas Going Up
Cole, 10, of Blanding, UT
Posted June 18, 2008
Here all the prices are going up. Gas is about $5.01. I am not like all those kids who just watch television all day. I plan on doing something about it.
My name is Cole and my dad and I are going to make a car that does not need gas. We could go anywhere we want!
Soon we will be doing all sorts of stuff, and will be traveling all around the USA. I hope that soon no one will be using gas.
Cardiovascular Disease

Posted June 18, 2008
Cardiovascular disease is the first and third leading causes of death of the United States accounting for more than 40% of all deaths.
Cardiovascular disease refers to many different types of heart or blood vessel problems. It's used most often to describe damage caused to your heart or blood vessels by arteriosclerosis.
Some forms of CVD (Cardiovascular disease) that aren't caused by arteriosclerosis, are diseases such as congenital heart disease, heart valve disease, heart infections, or diseases of the heart muscle called cardiomyopathy.
Estimates for the year 2005 are that 80,700,000 people in the United States have one or more forms of CVD and that's not good. So take care of your heart, by eating healthy and exercising regularly.
GAS

Gas prices won't stop going up! They are way to high! The people who run these gas stations are getting GREEDY!
Before you know it, gas prices will be through the roof! One gallon right now if about three dollars and Eighty-nine ($3.89) cents! Can you believe that by the end of this month of June it will be four dollars ($4.00).
When my mom was in high school it only cost her ten dollars to fill up her car! Too bad it's not like that now! People can't afford all these high prices for gas each day! Face it! It rises higher and higher each day. Mr. President needs to wake up and smell the coffee! It's about to be $4.00 and he's won't do a thing about it!
I'll I can say is . . . . someone needs to wake up and realize people are suffering!
The New Tiny Addition To Our Family
Josephine, 8, of NY
Posted June 18, 2008
We have a new addition to our family. She's only about three inches tall and six and a half inches long, with light grey eyes. Her name is Roxy. She is our new baby kitten. She is grey and white, with swirls of white in her fur, white big ears and has soft pink padding on her paws.
My sister's boyfriend found her in his basement. Roxy was three weeks old when we got her. She was scared and tried to find places to hide. Sometimes during the day, she would take naps in small places, and purr. We love Roxy, and she loves us.
It was hard getting her to eat at first, but she picked up pretty quick. She likes to sit around and sometimes explore. We had trouble keeping her from under the bed. We still do! She plays with a lot of our stuff and sticks her head in our food!
She wants to play and taste other food, but she can't. She plays with things that roll. She pounces on things that move and sit still. Sometimes she'll jump up high and attack things that move in the air. She licks and bites when she plays. "Don't let her lick your face!" my dad says. She sniffs things she's not sure about and then walks away. She likes sitting in the window when she's hot and sometimes tries to eat my mom's plants! She jumps on us and hits our hair. She'll play rough sometimes but she's good!
She likes chicken, and cat food. Mom says cats love tuna. I hope she likes apple juice and other stuff. Mom says cats don't like a lot of things. She's cute, cuddly and fun! She is our new Family member!
Is It Good When China Makes Everything?
Julia, 10, of Farmington, MI
Posted June 18, 2008
Is it good when China's making everything? NO! Next thing you know, china's making "FREE TIBET" T-shirts and hats. I looked at my hat. Guess what? It's made from China. I look at plastic wrap. it's made from China. I look at basically everything in my house, and at LEAST 85% of the stuff is made in China's. Are they taking over OUR JOBS?
Ok. I think it's nice that China's selling high quality things, but think about this. When you are using a globe to study, do you ever think of the children in China being forced to be tortured to do all of this work? Getting very little money so they can feed their family? I'm guessing that's a no. It's true. The kids are suffering for making us globes. Well, now people are going to say that it's our entire fault because we're the ones buying the stuff. But, that's not true. If you walked into a mall, I bet you'd only see one or two items that aren't made in China. Please, try not to buy things from China.
Did you notice the rising gas prices? Of course you do. Do you notice food and items prices are rising? I know I do. Well, part of this has to do with China. The things China makes are not going to just poof in America! They have to ship it, or fly it over to America! Of course, that takes up gas. Not China's gas, OUR gas. Do you want China to just waste our gas like that?
I really wonder why we are letting them do this to themselves and to us. One way to stop the suffering of Chinese children, don't buy things MADE IN CHINA! :)

Seat Belts Are Mandatory for a Reason
Kayla, 14, of Kentucky
Posted June 18, 2008
My friend, Drew, died in a car crash. He wasn't wearing his seat belt nor was the driver. The driver ended up in the hospital and is okay, but not my friend Drew. The car was wreaked.
It's so dangerous not to wear your seat belt. The state makes it mandatory to wear it or you'll get a ticket. People really should think about putting it on when they get into a car and not think twice about it. It definitely saves lives.
Alligator in a Pond!
Mia, 10, of Spartanburg, South Carolina
Posted June 18, 2008
My dad was going to Charleston, South Carolina for a business trip and he went by this pond where an alligator was sitting, trying to catch some fish. He surprised us with the story of the alligator in the pond. He said, "it was a good size gator too!"
We asked to go with him on his next trip to Charleston, SC so we can check out the alligator too. But as we passed the pond, there was no gator to be seen and were sad about it.
But my dad made it up to us by taking us to the beach the next day. We took a walk that night, when it was high tide for at least 30 minutes.
Poor Kids in AFRICA
Emily, 10, of Massachusetts
Posted June 18, 2008
I was watching Oprah the other day and she had a bunch of kids on her show talking about the O Ambassadors program. It was a bunch of kids going to Africa to help other kids in developing countries.
I thought it was a good idea that it was kids helping other kids. And you learn so many things about the developing countries, the children, what their lives are day to day, and how hopeful they are for the future.
We really need to do something to help them. Like right now. Please.
Why the Last Days of School Stink
Anonymous, 10
Posted June 18, 2008
Ahh, school is coming to an end, and the best part of it is summer. The worst is that most schools lack air conditioning, so on hot days, kids really sweat a lot. Kids just can't learn in the heat.
Some times, if it gets too hot, and school is called off due to the risk of fainting. Some schools though don't let you. You just get half days, which in my opinion, is unfair.
Worse for some kids who go to school year round, they have to take the heat every day over the summer. Even worse, only some rooms get air conditioning, such as the office, but not classrooms. And if teachers suggest a day off, they get turned down. They're not trying to get a day off (in that sense). They just want to make sure we're safe.
California Wildfires

California Wildfires strike again! California is so dry with no rain for days, which is starting the wildfires.
They are losing wood for paper and the oxygen! People and animal are losing their homes and their lives, and are struggling for survival! Why won't the government help these people, and donate food and shelter and cash who have lost EVERYTHING?!?!
But, the good news is, they are not losing there ecosystem because plants still grow from the nutrients of the ashes that were left over.
Please, help the people is California with the wildfires.
Kids Taking Over?
Dragana, 11, of IN
Posted June 18, 2008
Have you ever wondered if kids will one day rule the world? If so, you are right. Many children have now taken over. Now kids yell at their parents, and the parents feel guilty when it should be the other way around. I know as a kid myself, I do like to have permission to do things that my parents let me do. But now some kids aren't asking any more, they're just doing what they want. Like that kid who was on Dr. Phil's show. He was yelling at his mom and even slapped her.
Yelling Central -- Parent sometimes yell at their kids when doing something wrong. All of you reading probably know that already. They do so only because they love us and they want us to grow to be great people.
We kids need to get a grip and treat our parents with some respect.
Wild Turkeys in the Middle of the Road!
Shani, 12, of MN
Posted June 18, 2008
By the time this is read, it might be old news, but it's a very interesting story!
On the 13th of June, four wild turkeys were spotted in the middle and on the side of Highway 62 in Eden Prairie. My mother called the non-emergency line to report it, and apparently she was the only one to call. They were in plain sight, so I highly doubt we were the only people to see them.
In edition to calling the non-emergency line, we also called the local FOX 9 station, and they said they were going to look into it.
How Our Class Started A Newspaper
Ana, 9, of Syracuse, New York
Posted June 18, 2008
A few of my friends and I wanted to create a newspaper a few months ago. We did it by asking our principal permission. She said that we could and we were very happy.
We got some kids to do the weather, sports, and entertainment. We did it right from our classroom and thought we could give some kids something to read that was about sports and weather and other things that involved kids who are in the fourth grade.
Now our fourth grade class has their own newspaper that we can be very proud of.
Are Kids Learning Anything or Not?
Alexis, 11, of Watertown
Posted June 18, 2008
Are kids learning anything in school or not? When I'm in school some kids don't listen and don't pay attention. It's sad that they don't turn in their homework because they're not listening to their teacher. Do your kids know what they're supposed to be doing or are they behind?
Parents should reprimand their kids and take away watching television, or playing outside until their kids make an effort and get their stuff together and learn.
Let's Chill!
Mariella, 7, of Raleigh
Posted June 18, 2008
Well, possibly, everybody wants to chill at this time of the year! I mean, who doesn't? Well, I picked up some places that can let you chill! Go play in the pool! My friend Brice at Casa Expranza in the classroom of LE8 said, "I had a blast at the Bahamas but not before 10:04AM. You've got to get your beauty sleep before you do that!"
If you're in the Bahamas, you can play in the hot blazing sun or go surfing or go horseback riding or snorkel! Just make sure you bring a bathing suit and, of course, sunscreen, then you're ready!
Just make sure when your chilling, you're prepared and have lots of fun.
