Girl Scouts Serve Lunch at Lunch Box!
by Amanda, of Poughkeepsie, NY
POSTED July 11th, 2007

Junior Girl Scout Troop 222 volunteered their time on April 5th at a soup kitchen called The Lunch Box. The Lunch Box is a place where people can go to get food and clothes. There were about 100 people there and the girls were kept very active.

Troop 222 was working on an achievement patch that included helping people. While they were serving lunch, they got good looks at the people they were helping and realized that they seemed happy to just be served by the Scouts. One elderly man said, "I am 73-years-old and I can't be happier." They served noodles with meat sauce, bread, milk, coffee, and dessert.

"It was fun serving coffee and learning how important it is to help people in our community!" stated 9-year-old Rebecca. Amanda, her sister said, "It was a lot of fun to seve bread and talk to the people." The troop leader, Mrs. C, said "I think the girl's impression of who comes to a soup kitchen was challenged. They thought they would be serving the homeless, but they saw families, young people, seniors, and physically-handicapped people who looked just like anyone else. These were just people who could use a helping hand and the girls were happy to be involved."

The people were very happy to have the 9 Scouts helping them get food! The Lunch Box is located in the city of Poughkeepsie in New York and the troop was tired after the job. For a treat they got pizza afterwards! The experience was heart-warming and the girls learned a lot.
