Suffragists Stand Up for Women
Emily, 12, of Boston
Posted July 16, 2008

What do Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott, Lucy Stone, Sojourner Truth, Amelia Bloomer have in common? Simple. They were all suffragists.

What are suffragist? Suffragists are people who stand up for women's rights. These suffragists in particular -- they and many others -- are the reason women have the vote and many other rights today. Even today men can still get paid more than women, just because they're men.

I don't know about anyone else, but as for me, I'm all for women's rights!

Caracal
Peyton, 9, of Haslet
Posted July 16, 2008

What is a caracal anyway you maybe asking yourself? A caracal is a type of big cat also know as the Persian Lynx or African Lynx. Males typically weigh about 28-40 lbs, while females are smaller. It's about 2 ft in length, plus a tail about 1 foot. It has longer legs and a slimmer appearance than a lynx. The color of the fur is varied: it may be wine-red, grey or sand-colored. There are also black caracals. Young caracals bear reddish spots on the underside; adults do not have markings except for black spots above the eyes.

The most conspicuous feature of the caracal is its long, tufted black ears, which also explain the origin of its name -- karakulak, Turkish for "black ear". Caracal's ears are controlled by 20 different muscles to help it find its prey. Interesting, none-the-less.

Caracals live in the rainforest and the mountains. You could be asking yourself why they are alive? You may also think they destroy every thing, but you are wrong, they keep the population down on animals like the average deer and moose.

How they got here no one knows how exactly. Well others think they been here forever, but me, I say you should not guess how, but just keep wondering how.

Driving with Your Cellphone
Megan, 8, of Ohio
Posted July 16, 2008

Please stop using your cell phone while you're driving. It is a horrible thing to do and can cause a car accident or death.

All states should have laws for turning off your phone in the car. Drivers should not be paying attention to the phone but to the road. If it's so necessary, then get an ear-piece and be responsible.

Drivers should always be paying attention to the road. Accidents can happen for the littlest of thing. Always keep alert and you should have two hands on the steering wheel. Pay attention to the road and watching for the lights, signs and other cars.

Cheerleading Rocks!
Maggie, 12, of Tennessee
Posted July 16, 2008

The obsession of cheerleading starts early in the life of little girls, as for me, I grew up loving basketball and football. I was a tomboy. As I grew older I thought I had to be girlie. I tried out for cheerleading without loving it. I made the squad and instantly fell in love with it. It was and has been my life for two years now. Cheerleading involves the following elements:

YELLING! I was scared that people would make fun of my yelling voice so I ran and ran and ran. I figured out that if I yelled, I didn't have to run. Cheers are fun. My squad almost always puts stunts in our cheers.

Tumbling is very fun, too. You want to start out with a round-off, then you can move up to the harder things like: back handsprings, front handsprings, front punch, and back tucks. I almost have my back handspring and my front handspring. The best way to learn these moves is to go to a gymnastic class.

Stunting is awesome! There are four positions: back spot, flyer, right base, and left base. I am a right base. But last year, I was a flyer. The bases hold the flyer up. The back spot helps lift the flyer. The flyer is the person up in the air.

So being a cheerleader isn't so bad. It's very athletic and can be competitive too.

A Solution to Gas Prices
Maggie, 12, Rutherford, Tennessee

Gas prices are through the Roofs!! But is there a way to make a water car?

My science teacher always gets off the subject, so I have a small story. He used to work on lawns in high school. One day during the summer Mr. Warren wanted to take a girl on a date. He took the money he made that day, five dollars, and took her out. He took her to McDonalds, a movie, a gas station, and back to her house. He had fifty cents left over. He said that gas was only thirty cents a gallon.

Today it is over four dollars! Why can't we use water as fuel? Use ingredients with water to make fuel. If I can think of that surely a mechanic could build an engine to use a water base fuel. Think about it. Kids saving the planet. We can do anything adults can and we can do it in our pajamas.

Planet to Pluloid
Maima, 10, of Minnesota
Posted July 16, 2008

Two years ago International Astronomical Union (IAU) decided to re-classify Pluto was no longer a planet.

In June 2008, they decided Pluto would be known as a Plutoid. A plutoid is the new name for a same round ball shaped object that is a trans-Neptunian dwarf planet. The IAU developed this category of astronomical objects as a consequence of its 2006 resolution defining the word "planet". The IAU's formal definition of 'plutoid,' announced 11 June 2008, is:

"Plutoids are celestial bodies in orbit around the Sun at a semi-major axis greater than that of Neptune that have sufficient mass for their self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that they assume a hydrostatic equilibrium (near-spherical) shape, and that have not cleared the neighborhood around their orbit. Satellites of plutoids are not plutoids themselves."

How many plutoids will they find in space?

Hold the Tomato

The news for today is the poisonous tomatoes in 23 states that are hurting people. This poison tomato could be in restaurants and stores near you.

It started on June 3, 2008. What it does is that it gives people salmonella poisoning which causes fever, diarrhea and cramps. That's why you should get away from the poison tomato or be very careful of what you pick up at the market.

Is Chris Brown the Best of the Best?
Alisa, 10, of MN
Posted July 16, 2008

Well a survey at Garden City tells that most kids at Camp Rocks like Chris Brown as a favorite music artist. Research reveals that less than two years ago Chris Brown was just a normal 17 year old boy. He grew up with a lot of stars around him like Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Usher.

Chris Brown was determined to be a star and fortunately it happened. He has won a lot of awards on BET like Best New Artist, Viewers Choice, Best R&B/ Soul New Artist and Outstanding New Artist. Will Chris Brown keep his title or will he fall like the many stars?

Going Green
Karina, 12, of California
Posted July 16, 2008

Writing on a post by Mackenzie, 10, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, dated April 16, 2008. I think Mackenzie is right.

At elementary schools around the world kids are going green. At one elementary school kids are selling Welch's all-natural fruit snacks to help raise money to buy trees to plant in the courtyard. At another school they are walking, biking or carpooling to get to school everyday.

What can you do to go green and help the environment? The three R's: recycle, reuse, reduce. By doing only those three things you can make a difference in your world. If everyone only did one thing a day to help the environment it would make a HUGE difference!

Lets take this one step at a time. How can you recycle? Well, instead of throwing away paper, recycle it. When you do that it means that less trees are being cut down and that means there's more good oxygen to breath. Also you can recycle cans and bottles. Take a step and find out when your recycling truck comes. The more you recycle, the less trash you have. The less trash you have, the less trash dumping areas there will be and that will help the environment.

How can you reuse and reduce? Well if you refill water bottles, that's a start. If you can conserve, you can preserve. Preserve what? The Earth. How can you reduce? Well, take for instance you don't buy what you won't use. I hope you'll take into consideration what I told you about the three R's.

We should use cloth bags instead of plastic. You can get them at any discount store or your grocer who believes in going green. You should not litter or else the world could be a big Dump. Another thing WE should do is, use hybrid cars. They use less gas and gas is one thing that is polluting the air. Most garbage gets dumped in lakes and rivers, and fish and dolphins get caught in it. Some schools have earth day where we pick up garbage and do other stuff too.

Being good to our earth is very good so please use the three Rs and use cloth bags too.

Miley Cyrus
Kennedy, 10, of California
Posted July 16, 2008

This is what Zoey, 11, from Tennessee posted about Miley/Hannah on April 30, 2008, "leave her she is a good singer."

Miley/Hannah is the worst singer EVER!!!!! I hate her. I agree with Olivia, age 10 of Westfield. The ONLY reason why she's even an actress/pop star (but she stinks at both of them) is because her daddy is Billy Ray Cyrus.

He can't sing either, they tweaked his voice, and now he and his 13-year-old daughter are famous. So if you agree with me, Zoey, and Olivia of Westfield STOP I REPEAT S-T-O-P buying her and her dad's albums, and other weird accessories.

The movie Kun Fu Panda came out June 6, 2008. "Kung Fu Panda" features Jack Black as Po the Panda, a lowly waiter in a noodle restaurant, who is a kung fu fanatic but whose shape doesn't exactly fit for kung fu fighting. In fact, Po's defining characteristic appears to be that he is the laziest of all the animals in ancient China.

July 2008 - 14,000 athletes are going to the Olympics games in Beijing.

This is the first time dirt bike racing will be there and softball will not. Who says what can be in the games or not? Who makes up the rules? I mean, really, why are they taking certain sports out. What's the point? Anyway, the Olympics are from Aug 8th -- Aug 24th.

Watch your local listing to see more. Who do think is going to win the most medals?

Posted July 16, 2008

In a survey Garden City students said that Valleyfair is the place they would most like to visit this summer.

Valleyfair is in Shakopee, Minnesota. The park is open now and closes on September 15th. Why does everyone like Valley fair? They like it because it is fun and it has cool rides too. Some of the best rides are the Wild, Thunder Canyon, and Hurricane Falls.

You can get discount tickets at Cub Foods and Taco Bell where I live.
