The Second Avenue Subway Breaks Ground

On April 12, 2007, the Second Avenue Subway in New York City finally broke ground after decades of delay. The reason why the subway line was delayed so long is because the Metropolitan Transit Authority went through financial issues and eventually the project was abandoned in the 70's.

The Second Avenue Subway is planned to be completed by 2030 and a partially line opened by 2013. The line is proposed to run from 125 Street and Lexington Avenue to Hanover Square near Chrystie Street via Second Avenue. In New York City, every subway line has a letter or number like A, L, 7, etc. So, the line was assigned the letter T. Another line is supposed to meet up with the T line at 64 Street and that line is the Q, or the Broadway Express. Yes the same Broadway which hosts Broadway musicals!

Many people are anxious for the subway to open as many people take the bus or the neighboring Lexington Avenue Subway and very often they get overcrowded. The MTA intends to fix that by opening the most demanding section of Second Avenue by 2013.
