Happy Holidays
by Jessica, 10, of New York

People slowly drive past the house with all the decorations at night, kids pressing their noses against windows to see Santa Claus waving to them. Or rather, THREE Santa Clauses waving to them, 26 reindeer in the evening sky, seven angels flapping their wings, and not one dreidel or menorah in sight. Why is Christmas such a biggie when Hanukah and Kwanzaa are not?
Maybe it's because Christmas is asssociated with presents. Who can't resist a jolly old man in a big red suit that gives you free toys? But a Hanukah tradition is giving presents as well. It also may be so because the "real" story of Christmas (think nativity scenes) is a Catholic story, which is a common religion in the United States.
This year, try to live the "s" at the end of Happy Holidays. Add a dreidel or a menorah or other non-Christmas symbols to the city of decorations in your front yard, even if you don't celebrate those religions. And have fun with it, too! Spin the dreidel. Light the candles. Celebrate all three holidays!
