The Milk Makers

Language: English | Español

It’s fresh and cold, foamy and white, and one of nature’s most nutritious foods—milk! Everyone learns about this delicious liquid as this book explains the process of how cows produce milk and how it is processed before being delivered to stores. LeVar visits California’s dairy country where he receives a lesson on milking a cow by hand, as well as an introduction to the modern way of milking and feeding 600 cows. Viewers get a factory tour and see how cheese is made.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

SHAKE IT UP BABY!

Try making your own butter!

You will need:

  • heavy whipping cream
  • a plastic jar with a tight-fitting lid
  • small strainer
  • salt
  • crackers
  1. Have one child pour the heavy whipping cream in the jar. Secure the lid.
  2. Have your children take turns shaking the jar. After about 5 minutes, small curds of butter will form.
  3. Drain off the liquid and rinse the butter under cool water, squeezing gently.
  4. Add a little salt and spread on some crackers to taste.

Moo-Moo Milkshake

For each shake, you will need:

  • ice-cream scoop
  • crew-top jar
  • ice cream (any flavor)
  • milk
  • chocolate syrup (optional)
  • tall glass and drinking straw
  1. Allow ice cream to soften before scooping. Then scoop ice cream and fill the jar half full.
  2. Pour milk until the jar is ¾ full.
  3. Add a tablespoon of chocolate syrup, if you wish.
  4. Put the lid on the jar and tighten.
  5. Shake hard until the ice cream and milk are mixed. It might take a few minutes, so an adult might want to help.
  6. Remove the lid and pour into a glass and sip through straw!
