Saturday Sancocho

Language: English | Español

It’s early in the morning as vendors at the neighborhood “Swap and Flea Market” set up. Hints of “swapping”—trading coffee for strawberries—set the stage for Saturday Sancocho, written and illustrated by Leyla Tomes. LeVar explores the fun of collecting and trading treasures—and how it’s based on the ever-changing nature of value. All the while, he is classifying, estimating, bartering, trading, collecting and figuring out trade—and monetary—values.

Here are activities to do after watching this episode:

Jewelry from Junk

Materials you will need:

  • small cardboard shapes (diamonds, hearts, triangles, squares)
  • glue
  • assortment of small objects…macaroni, buttons, lace, glitter
  • hot glue gun
  • safety pins

Directions:

  1. Choose a cardboard shape
  2. Arrange small objects on it. Then glue the arrangement in place. Allow the glue to dry.
  3. Using hot glue gun, attach a safety pin to the back of the cardboard.
  4. May be painted (optional)

Salt Dough

Materials:

  • 2 ¼ cups water
  • 2 cups salt
  • 3 cups white flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour

Directions:

  1. Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan. Remove from the heat and stir in the salt. Mix the flours together in a large bowl.
  2. Add the salt water to the flours and stir. Knead on a flour-covered surface.
  3. Bake finished objects on a cookie sheet at 250 degrees for 2 to 3 hours. Check your objects every 20 minutes after the first 2 hours of baking
  4. When cool, decorate with tempera, acrylic or colored marking pens. Spray with clear acrylic finish to protect and preserve.

Jar Toppers

Materials you will need:

  • salt dough
  • assorted glass jars with metal lids
  • clear acrylic spray

Directions:

  1. Decorated dough-covered jar lids turn a plain pickle jar into a great gift idea. After the lids are baked, glue on candies, tiny decorations such as nutshell animals or toys, or even dog biscuits, if the gift happens to be for your favorite pet!
  2. The recipe for salt dough makes enough to cover 6 to 9 jar lids.
  3. Knead the dough until elastic. Divide into balls -- one for each jar lid. Shape each ball over a jar lid.
  4. Use a knife, spoon, fork or toothpick to make a design of holes and cuts on the dough. This is decorative, and also allows air to escape as the lid bakes.
  5. Shapes can be formed from the remaining dough and stuck onto the covered lid. Moisten the dough slightly so the shapes stick better.
  6. Place the dough-covered lids on a cookie sheet. Bake in the oven at 250 degrees for 2-3 hours or until hard and dry. Cool.
  7. Decorate the lids with paint or markers. Glue on candies or candy sprinkles. Spray with a clear acrylic coating.
  8. Fill the jars with goodies and gently screw on the lids. Tie a festive ribbon around each jar, and give to a favorite person…. or take to the Flea Market!
