A Day In The Life
African American Boy Born in 1853, you are a boy growing up during one of the most exciting and unsettling times in the history of the United States: the era of the Civil War. Imagine you are a slave. By 1865, with the end of the war and the defeat of the Confederacy, you will be free. Until then, you and your family were the property of the owner of a large cotton plantation in Texas. You lived in the slave quarters located some distance from the main house, or the “Big House” as it was known, where the master and his family reside.

In what kind of house would you and your family live?

a) A simple one room cabin.

b) A three-story brick row house.

c) A house built of sod and mud.

d) A tenement.
