These buildings were what many immigrants and pioneers wanted to get away from. There were few buildings to be found on the prairie and the ones that did exist were often built of wood. Tenement apartment buildings were located in the large cities across the country. Known for squeezing many people in small, cramped, and dark rooms, these buildings often had little heat, light, and ventilation.
