Why is knowing your extended family so important?

Blood is thicker than water -- people will stick by their family members more closely than they will acquaintances. If you are invited to an outing with classmates at the same time as a reunion with relatives, you'll go to the reunion. (Of course, if you're a teenager, you may prefer your classmates and friends rather than family and relatives!)
