Nana's Cookies

Here's what you will need to make it:

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 3 eggs

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 2 lemons

  • 3 cups flour

  • 3 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 cup confectioners sugar

  • 3 tablespoons milk

  • anise extract

  • colored sprinkles

  • large mixing bowl

  • wooden spoon

  • grater

  • strainer

  • 2 small bowls

  • medium-sized mixing bowl

  • cookie sheet

  • oven mitts

  • spoon

Here's what you have to do:

1. Caroline's great-grandmother is Portuguese, and she makes these traditional Portuguese cookies whenever her family gets together for a special occasion.

2. Check with a grown-up and wash your hands before you start this.

3. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. If you're not allowed to use an oven, make sure to ask an adult to help you.

4. In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, eggs, and oil. Mix it all together.

5. Now you're going to grate the peel of one of the lemons. You'll need 1 teaspoon of grated lemon peel. This will make your cookies taste nice and lemony. Just grate the yellow part of the peel, and stop when you get to the white, because this part tastes bitter.

6. Now, you'll need to squeeze the 2 lemons to make 1/4 cup of lemon juice. Roll the lemon to make it softer and then cut the lemon in half and squeeze it into a small bowl. It's a good idea to strain the lemon juice so you don't get any seeds in your cookies.

7. Now add the lemon juice and grated lemon peel to your egg mixture.

8. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the flour with the baking powder and mix together.

9. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture, a 1/2 cup at a time. Make sure to stir the egg mixture after you add each 1/2 cup of flour.

10. Sprinkle some flour on your work surface and then knead the dough. If the dough is really sticky, you can add a little more flour. You want to knead the dough for about five minutes.

11. Pull off a small piece of dough and roll it in your hands. Roll it into a log about 3 inches long.

12. Cross the ends of the log to make a shape that looks like the beginning of the number eight. Now close the ends to compete the eight-shape.

13. Place the cookies on a cookie sheet and bake them for about 10 minutes or until your cookies are light brown. Remember to use oven mitts.

14. You can eat your cookies right away, or you can frost them. To frost your cookies:

15. In a small bowl, combine the confectioners sugar with the milk.

16. Then add 4 or 5 drops of anise extract. Anise tastes a lot like licorice. You can find it in the baking aisle at the grocery store.

17. Frost your cookies, and then add some colored sprinkles.

18. Bom Apetite! That's a Portuguese way of saying "enjoy your food."
