Pizza Pockets

Here's what you will need to make it:

  • 1 cup warm water

  • 1 envelope dry yeast

  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour

  • 1/2 cup white flour

  • 3 tablespoons olive

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour

  • 1 cup white flour

  • pizza sauce

  • pizza toppings like onions, peppers, broccoli, cooked chicken and grated cheese

  • 2 large mixing bowls

  • wooden spoon

  • cutting board

  • plastic wrap

  • rolling pin

  • fork

  • baking sheet

  • oven mitts

Here's what you have to do:

1. Pizza pockets (or calzones) are fun to make and neater to eat than pizza slices.

2. Be sure to wash your hands and check with a grown-up before you begin. You'll be using an oven for this recipe.

3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

4. Put 1 cup of warm water, 1 envelope of dry yeast, 1/2 cup of whole wheat flour, and 1/2 cup of white flour in a large mixing bowl.

5. Stir it all together with a wooden spoon and set it aside for 15 minutes while the yeast begins to react. It will look lumpy, but that's okay.

6. Stir in 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 cup of whole wheat flour, and 1 cup of white flour. Add the flour just a little bit at a time.

7. Mix it all together with a wooden spoon until it starts to get hard. When it's too hard to mix with the spoon, dump it out onto a floured board or counter.

8. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes or until it is no longer sticky. Put a little flour on your hands and the board too so it won't be as gooey.

9. Put the dough into a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and set it aside in a warm place to rise for about an hour.

10. Once the dough has risen, spread a handful of flour onto your work surface. Divide the dough into 8 pieces.

11. Roll out each piece of dough, then stretch it into a circle.

12. Spread pizza sauce on one half of the dough circle. Leave the edges of the dough sauce free.

13. Add whichever toppings you'd like. The ZOOMers used peppers, broccoli, and cooked chicken. Sprinkle the toppings with grated cheese.

14. Fold the other half of dough over on top of the cheese, toppings, and sauce.

15. Use a fork to push the edges together to make a pocket.

16. Gently move the pocket onto a baking sheet. Use oven mitts to put the baking sheet into the oven.

17. Bake the pizza pockets for about 20 minutes or until the crust is golden-brown.

18. Be sure to let your pizza pockets cool before you dig in.
