What you need for this ZOOMdo:
  • modeling clay
  • plaster gauze strips
  • cardboard
  • disposable plastic bowl
  • scissors
  • paint
  • beads
  • feathers
  • string

What you do for this ZOOMdo:

  1. First, make the form of the mask: Turn a plastic bowl upside down, and press the clay over the bottom of the bowl, using it as a mold.
  2. Add more clay for the features, like the eyes and the nose. You can also cut shapes out of cardboard.
  3. Now for the plaster gauze strips: Fill a disposable bowl with water. Make sure your container is disposable because you'll want to throw it out after you're done. Don't ever pour plaster down your drain because it will harden and clog your pipes!
  4. Dip plaster strips into the water and squeeze off the extra water. Rub the plaster into the gauze.
  5. Put the strips on the clay, overlapping and smoothing the strips as you go.
  6. Cover all of the clay. Apply several layers to make the mask strong.
  7. Once you're done, let the mask dry overnight. Once it's dry, peel it off of the clay. You may need to make a few repairs to the mask with a couple of plaster gauze strips after you take it off of the clay.
  8. Decorate your mask with paint, beads, feathers, or whatever else you want to use. If you want, you can use scissors to cut out eyeballs, nostrils, and a mouth. If you're not allowed to use scissors, ask an adult to help you.
  9. Cut one hole on each side and tie a piece of string through each hole.
  10. Last, put your mask on!
