What you need for this ZOOMdo:
  • holey, old sweaters
  • darning needles
  • yarn
  • scissors
  • chalk
  • straight pins

What you do for this ZOOMdo:

  1. Take an old, holey, stretched-out sweater that you don't wear anymore.
  2. Cut two big rectangles out of it.
  3. Lay the rectangles on top of each other. If the sweater has a design, make the sides with the pattern face each other.
  4. Pin the two layers together with straight pins. Straight pins look like this:

  1. Use a piece of chalk to draw the outline of a mitten. You want to make the mitten outline bigger than your hand. Use an old mitten or your hand as a guide.
  2. Then cut the outline out with scissors. You're going to cut through both layers at once.

  1. Then start sewing. Pick some yarn that is close in color to the mitten. You'll want to use a darning needle. They're used for stitching things with yarn.

  1. Thread a long piece of yarn through the darning needle. You'll need to tie a knot in the end of it. You can do that by taking the yarn and wrapping it around the end of your finger.
  2. Roll it off your finger and pull it.

  1. After you make your knot, you want to make two loops forward, and then go one loop back, like this. This is called a backstitch.
  2. You're going to sew around the whole edge of the mitten using a backstitch. Make sure you leave the hole to get your hand in!

  1. Tie off the end. Make a circle with the thread first, pulling your thread to the end, and loop it again through the same hole. Then bring the thread back through the loop and pull it tight.

  1. Next, take out the pins and pull the mitten inside out. This is why you had the patterns facing each other on the inside, because now...
  2. They're on the outside! Now, you're ready to make another mitten in exactly the same way.
  3. When you've made both mittens, put them in warm water. If they are 100% wool, they'll shrink a lot. If not, they might shrink a little.
  4. Take the two mittens and put them in the dryer on low for about 15 minutes. This should shrink them a bit more, and make them feel stretchy when they're worn.
  5. After you and your friends make your mittens, you can make your own mitten tree to donate to an organization in your community.
