Get the string and ice to make nice.

Stuff You'll Need

  • large glass of water
  • ice cubes
  • salt
  • string

How to do it

  1. Do you think that you can get an ice cube out of a glass of water using a piece of string?
  2. Here's a way that you can. The magic ingredient is salt.
  3. Drop an ice cube into a glass of water.
  4. Put a pinch of salt on the ice cube.
  5. Drag the string over the ice cube.
  6. Now put a little more salt on top of the string. In about three minutes try lifting the ice out of the water with the string. The string becomes attached to the ice.
  7. This works because the salt melts the ice and makes a small puddle of water on top of the ice cube. The puddle then re-freezes a little bit around the string and you have "rising ice."
  8. Salt does interesting things to ice. In the winter, it's used to melt ice on the streets. You can also use ice to make CafeZOOM's Easy Ice Cream in a baggie.
