Play it cool by building your own ice box.
Materials

Materials Needed

  • cardboard box (less than one cubic foot)
  • waxed paper
  • masking tape
  • newspaper
  • aluminum foil
  • rubber bands
  • ice cubes

Instructions

Instructions

  1. Using these materials, make a container to see how long you can keep an ice cube from melting. Find out what works best to keep the heat away from the ice cube. Wrapping the box in aluminum foil? Hanging the cube?
  2. Put your ice cube in the container. Take another ice cube and don't put it in a Keep-a-Cube container. It will be your control. In 90 minutes, check both ice cubes. If at the end of 90 minutes, the control ice cube is the same size as the ice cube in your Keep-a-Cube container, the container didn't do much to keep the ice cube from melting.

Keep experimenting with ice cubes. Build another Keep-a-Cube container using different materials, like a plastic bowl instead of a box, or notebook paper instead of waxed paper. Test it out, then share your results with the world in our fabulous ZOOMsci feedback area.

My Cube didn't melt until 2 weeks! I couldn't believe it because at first I thought it was just a phoney expierement but WOW IT WORKED! Science is so so so cool for me now! Seriously I thought it was awsome. It even surprised my family!

It stayed un-melted for 3 hours when I wrapped the cube in waxed paper, then wrapped that in newspaper, then tied it off with rubber bands. Then I leaned the carboard up against a wall, to create a shady spot. Then, I put my cube container in the shade.

I put the ice cube in a plastc ziploc bag and put the bag in a 1LB butter container and that in a 3LB butter container. In the 3LB and around the 1LB I put an insulator, then taped up the 3LB box with masking tape. It didn't melt for 3 days!!!

I did the Keep-a-Cube expirement and it barley was smaller then when I put it in. I had hung it inside the box and put aluminum foil on the outside. I also poked air holes into the box.

I wrapped the ice cube in tin foil and put it in a zip-loc bag. Then I put three holes in the bag. I took string and tied it around the ice cube. Then I put the rest of the string up and down in the holes. After that you take the string and reach it back to the loop and now it is ready!

I made it out of a jar with a smaller cup that had tin foil wrapped around it. I put styrophome and cotton stuffings between the two glass jars. Then I had a stopper made of styrophome and aluminum foil right below the lid. I wraped the glass jar with plastic bags and insulation.
