My favourite thing about equestrian is working with horses. It's a lot of fun to work with them and just to spend time with them. Secondly, I like equestrian because it requires two athletes that have to work together. Unlike working with another teammate, you can't just tell a horse what you want it to do. This makes it so much more challenging and competitive.
Horses have been a part of my family since the 1900's, and my grandfather owned a successful thoroughbred and standardbred (horseracing) operation. Both he and my Dad put me on my first pony and, along with my entire family, have supported me ever since. Loving horses was a natural step for me, yet no one in my family has ever professionally show-jumped horses like I would like to.
I am motivated by my love for the horse and my passion for the sport. Both mean a lot to me and I want to do as best I possibly can. Team events and any traveling I do regarding show jumping encourage me even more. International competitions give me a taste of what I want to do in the future so they are my favorite events.
In the next 5 years I would like to compete on the Ontario Young Riders team as well as any other international events that I am able to qualify for.
If anyone is interested in trying the sport of show jumping, they should try out all the different sports that have to do with horses. If you love horses, there is probably a sport that is perfect for you.
