Cooking with Abuela

In the deliciously fun "Cooking with Abuela" activity, you and your child will experience the joys of cooking with Maya and Miguel's grandmother, Abuela Elena. Throughout the game's 7 recipe activities, your child will have fun and learn about cooking and measuring. Explore the environment to find the ingredients on the recipe card; and find "mystery ingredients" with clues from Abuela. This activity may be played in English or Spanish, and on an easy or hard level. Audio support and two levels of English/Spanish language will help to successfully guide and encourage new and second language learners. At the end of the activity, a funny cooking animation plays and your child will be able to print a recipe.

Playing "Cooking with Abuela" supports these important learning objectives:

  • to encourage English and Spanish language acquisition
  • to use episode vocabulary in English and Spanish
  • to use picture-word association
  • to improve language and literacy skills through spoken and written language
  • to promote an appreciation of cultural diversity
  • to encourage understanding of various units of measurement
  • to use critical reasoning to deduce clues about ingredients and amounts

Extend your child's "Cooking with Abuela" learning experience by using these ideas:

  • invite your child to cook with you on a regular basis
  • reinforce the learning of math measurements by encouraging your child to use basic kitchen measuring tools
  • discover more fun ways to experiment with food in the kitchen by reading: How Are You Peeling?: Foods with Moods by Sexton Freymann (Ages 4-8)
  • when dining out, try culturally different restaurants and discover diverse tastes enjoyed around the world
