Teenager Crosses Ocean on a Cheeky Monkey
A British teen sailed his boat into the world record book on January 3rd. After six weeks at sea, Michael Pernam successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean all by himself. At fourteen years old, he is the youngest person to ever make the trip alone. Michael left Gibraltar, a port on the southern tip of Spain, November 19th. He sailed west 3,500 miles to Antigua, a small island in the Caribbean Sea[ID1]. His 28-foot boat is named Cheeky Monkey!
During his six-week trip, he braved choppy seas that are home to both dolphins and sharks. Just in case of trouble, his dad sailed behind him in a different boat. Father and son were in radio contact, and on Christmas they celebrated by singing carols across the airwaves.
Arriving in Antigua, Michael was thrilled to break the transatlantic record. But he did admit he was looking forward to sleeping in a dry bed that wasn't rocking and rolling underneath him.
