Life and Death of Sir Edmund Hillary
The world's most famous mountain climber died at the age of 88. Sir Edmund Hillary, a New Zealand beekeeper, was the first man to reach the peak of Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain. He reached the 29,035-foot top of the world on May 29th, 1953.
Sir Hillary became famous for his incredible climb, but he didn't do it alone. Tenzing Norgay climbed with him and helped him along the way. Together, the men carved steps out of the ice to climb their way up. Norgay was a Sherpa guide. The Sherpas are people who live in Nepal. Nepal and Tibet are the two countries that border Mount Everest.
Mount Everest is named after the first Englishman to record the height of the mountain. The Nepalese name for the mountain is Sagarmatha, which means goddess of the sky.
Before Hillary and Norgay succeeded, people were not sure if anyone could reach the top of Everest. There is not much oxygen in the air because the peak is so high. Storms also come very fast and blizzards make it hard for climbers to see where they're going. Hundreds of people have died trying to climb Mt. Everest. Today there are still over a hundred bodies on the mountain of climbers who tried to reach the peak and never came back.
I'm Lucy and that's what happened in Sports this week!
See if you can locate the countries from my story in this week's Pinpoint.
