Teen Golf Whiz Wows the Pros by Making PGA Cut
Sixteen-year-old golf dynamo Tadd Fujikawa has been making big waves in the world of professional golf. The 5-foot-1 teen from Hawaii became the youngest player in 50 years to make a PGA Tour cut. The PGA, or Professional Golfers' Association, organizes the events that the pros play in. Famous PGA golfers include Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
Tadd competing as an amateur in the Sony Open earlier this month tied for 20th in the event. He played against seasoned pros twice his age. Last June, he was the youngest player since 1941 to make it into the U.S. Open. While his fellow Hawaiian Michelle Wie has been making headlines already, Tadd is quickly catching up. But, unlike Michelle, who turned professional at age 16, he says he will likely stay amateur even though he would have won about $50,000. The 10th grader plans to finish high school and go to college before taking a swing at the pros.
A lot of noise is made about Tadd's size. Fans are amazed that someone five-foot-one can hit the ball so far. He says that in his case, size does not matter. He is used to overcoming challenges. Tadd was born prematurely and weighed 1 pound, 15 ounces. His doctors said he had only 50 percent chance of living. Sixteen years later, Tadd is taking his success in stride - one swing at a time.
