Clothes That Clean Themselves
What if your clothes cleaned themselves? That's what scientists are asking, and they're starting to make it happen. Researchers in Australia are working with a chemical called titanium dioxide. This chemical reacts with sunlight to break down or decompose organic matter.
That means that it basically makes food, dirt, and even grease disappear in sunlight. The scientists have found a way to put an invisible coating of the chemical into clothing. Then, when the clothes get dirt and stains on them, sunlight cleans them!
The chemical doesn't hurt your skin, and it doesn't cause any problems with the clothing. It even kills harmful bacteria that cause infections. They tested the self-cleaning cloth by pouring red wine on a shirt that had the coating, and one that didn't. Red wine is one of the toughest stains to get out of clothes. But the shirt with the coating was almost clean again after 20 hours of sunlight. The untreated shirt was ruined.
It only took two hours for ink stains to clear up. The researchers say that the coating could be used for surfaces in hospitals, on furniture, and on just about anything that you want to keep clean. Kids everywhere are hoping the next invention will be a room that cleans itself!
I'm Isaac and that's what happened in technology this week.
