Yao's Big Ow
China's most famous athlete might miss his country's Olympics. Yao Ming is a 7-foot-6-inch tall basketball player for the Houston Rockets in the National Basketball Association. He was born and raised in Shanghai, China, and played for the Shanghai Sharks before coming to America. In 2002, he joined the Houston Rockets where he has been an all star for six straight years
Yao was scoring 22 points a game and having one of his best seasons when he
suffered a stress fracture in his left foot. A stress fracture is a small crack
in the bone that happens after someone puts lots of stress on the bone over and
over. It's a common injury for basketball players to have.
Yao had surgery this week to repair the fracture. It will take about three
months for his foot to heal, which means Yao could be back just in time to play
for China in the Beijing Olympics. It's a risky move. If he injures his foot
again, he could miss part of the Rocket's season next year. But, even though China is not expected to win a medal in basketball, Yao wants to be on the team.
He said that if he can't play for China in the Olympics, it would be the biggest
loss in his career up till now.
I'm Lucy and that's what happened in sports this week!
