Rare Baseball Card Sells for a Record-Breaking Amount

How many baseball cards can you buy for 2.35 million dollars? For a certain lucky collector the answer was just one! Cool! The card called the Honus Wagner tobacco card is worth so much because it is very rare and it is in perfect condition. There are only fifty or sixty known to exist. Most of the other Honus Wagner Tobacco cards are damaged or worn out because they weren't protected.

Honus Wagner was a shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates. His nickname was The Flying Dutchman. Wagner was one of the first five baseball players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The card was made by the American Tobacco Company in 1909. There were 500 cards in the series. One reason his card is so rare is because Wagner ordered the American Tobacco Company to stop printing them. Wagner was a nonsmoker and he did not want children to think he encouraged the use of tobacco.

Wagner's card is the most valuable, but other cards are also worth big bucks. The five most valuable cards are the 1932 U.S. Caramel Charles (Lindy) Lindstrom, the 1909 T206 Joe Doyle, the 1933 Napoleon Lajoie, and the 1909 T206 Eddie Plank.

When these cards were printed, nobody had any idea they would be worth so much. Remember that the next time you throw one of your own prized collections away!

I'm Lucy and that's what happened in Sports this week!
