Flu in Hong Kong Cancels School

Hong Kong kids got two weeks off from school. The government there shut down schools because of the flu. 500,000 students stayed home to stop an outbreak that's made some kids very sick. Most schools would have closed soon for Easter anyway. Making the vacation two whole weeks will help keep the flu from spreading.

About 532 people caught the flu so far, which isn't many considering that seven million people live there. The reason they shut the schools was because three kids died. But the World Health Organization said that two of those kids had other diseases, in addition to the flu.

Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. So diseases can spread quickly from person to person. Officials said the flu in Hong Kong doesn't appear to be any worse than the regular flu, and that there's no reason to panic. They are just being careful while they learn more about the situation.

A virus causes the flu. A virus can enter your body when you touch something with flu germs on it, and then touch your mouth, eyes, or nose. A great way to stay healthy is to wash your hands in soapy, warm water a few times a day and always before you eat.

I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.
