US to Collect DNA from Anyone Arrested
The United States government has a new idea to prevent crime. It's going to collect DNA samples from everyone it arrests. Those samples can help the government identify people who might commit crimes in the future. Why collect DNA? It's like a fingerprint. Every person's DNA is unique. Your DNA is in every cell of your body, and it reveals a lot about you. It shows what genes you have. Genes tell scientists if you're tall, if you have some diseases. It might even give clues to your personality.
Everywhere you go, you leave tiny bits of DNA. We're always shedding hairs and bits of dead skin wherever we are. A police detective could take those bits and match them with the samples that the government has collected to find out who was at a crime scene.
The DNA samples could help solve crimes. But some people worry that there is too much information about us in our DNA that could be used against us. And what about people who are arrested but turn out to be innocent? Critics of the plan worry that a government database of our DNA could violate our privacy.
What do you think?
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
