Bush Demands a Solution to the Darfur Crisis
In Africa, a country called Sudan is causing alarm across the world. Since 2003, over two hundred thousand people have died there from violence and disease! President Bush and others accuse the leaders of Sudan of committing genocide. That's the word used to describe a mass killing of only a certain kind of people with the intent to wipe them out.
Let me give you some background information to help you understand why people are killing each other over there. In Sudan is an area called Darfur. It's very poor and can't grow much food. The people who used to live there were a mix of Arabs and non-Arab people.
In 2003, a group of non-Arab complained that the government treated them unfairly. They decided to fight against the government. In response, groups of Arabs called Janjaweed militias were sent by the government to fight them. The Janjaweed have been committing many horrible acts against innocent people including women and children.
To get away from the fighting, millions of people fled into the neighboring countries of Chad and the Central African Republic. But violence and starvation has followed those people. Now, tensions are high between all three countries.
After years of nothing being done, President Bush is frustrated and demands an end to the violence. He said that if Sudan does not do something to stop the killing, the U.S. would stop trading with it. This is called sanctions. Other countries like Britain are joining Bush in his call for an end to the violence.
I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.
Let's play the Pinpoint game and find out exactly where in the world the Darfur crisis is happening!
